The studio released three films, all of which have grossed over $800 million worldwide while enjoying praise from critics and general audiences. Marvel Studios does not need anything else to validate their success this year, but a little Oscar® gold would not hurt and the studio officially has three contenders in the visual effects race.
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, Spider-Man: Homecoming, and Thor: Ragnarok are all on the shortlist for the Best Visual Effects Oscar®. The list includes 20 films that will eventually be whittled down to five nominees. It is unlikely that all three Marvel Studios movies will make the final cut when there are other strong contenders like War for the Planet of the Apes, Dunkirk, The Shape of Water, and Blade Runner 2049 (among others) to consider.
