The summer has now ended, and it looks like Hollywood has reason to smile. While attendance was still closer to 1992 than 2013, the domestic ticket sales were up 14% over the lousy 2017 summer movie season. More importantly (so says me), there were a variety of movies big (Paramount/Viacom Inc.’s Mission: Impossible – Fallout) and small (Warner Bros./Time Warner Inc.’s Crazy Rich Asians) that carved out their piece of the pie. Unlike the 2016 season, it wasn’t just about superheroes and animated epics. Unlike 2016 (and yet like 2017), most of the summer movies were some variation of “good.” Moviegoers are thus that much more likely to go back to the multiplex next summer.

The summer of MoviePass. I noticed the theaters that I go to were empty when you couldn’t buy MI tickets with MP. I noticed that they were less packed when peak pricing was started too, but worsen when MI came out. I think the industry needs MoviePass, not AMC Stub A-List, which only works on one theater chain.

What the industry needs is reevaluating their ticker pricing policy in general. Subscriptions are just dumb patch on overpriced tickets that are less and less competitive with streaming. I love seeing movies at cinema but a lot of people do not care about cinema experience when seeing prices almost on par with monthly streaming subscriptions.

Yeah, when you constantly make good to awesome movies, it disrupts the hell out of the industry. “Oh no! Now we have to make good movies too or no one will watch them! What are we going to do? Ban them from awards!
