The biggest box office challenge to J.J. Abrams’ trilogy capper was never about the alleged online backlash to The Last Jedi (at least some of which was propagated by Russian bot accounts). Nor was it about the box office failure of Solo: A Star Wars Story (a film that, fairly or not, moviegoers just didn’t want to see). It was always about the sheer amount of very big and demographically linked movies opening just before Star War Episode 9 when the ninth episode opens in the U.S. on December 20, 2019. But now, just within the last month, the Rey/Kylo finale no longer has to worry about Wonder Woman 1984, James Bond 25 or Death on the Nile. So that’s two potentially huge (and leggy) tentpoles and one adult-skewing biggie off the table.

Not sure about the youtube videos and what have you, but even the author of the study said he was afraid thats what people would leap on. And if you consider the criteria used, you’d see the stupidity in the leap yourself. It’s amazing that number wasn’t far larger.
I mean, if your user name included numbers, if you primarily engaged in political discussion during the most divisive political era in living memory, or you posted outside of ‘typical’ American hours, they labeled the account Russian. How many people do you know that work a nine to five? How many do you know with common names that decided to use numbers to distinguish themselves? How many do you know that have political views that don’t perfectly align with yours?
The far left media played this ridiculous conclussion up, as was feared by its very author. Likely because conclussions like this are so easy to use to dismiss studies in general. It discredits studies which actually adhere to scientific theory and don’t leap to unfounded conclussions.
The authors own work questions the validity his very profession. That’s like an astronaut that buys into flat earth or moon landing conspiracies. It’s possible, but you’d be calling yourself and the others before you frauds. But this is why people both believe and disbelieve the results of studies in general.

And no… Ep 9 won’t do as well as Ep 7. Sure, it’ll still make loads of money, but it’ll be nothing compared to what it could have been, had these films been any good. I mean, we are getting the conclusion to this “sequel story”, and do we even have any reason to care? I’m not going to theaters, I know that much.

No, no, no, Sparky – TLJ failed due to it being a 2.5 hour PSA instead of simply telling an entertaining SW story. This guy Scott Medelson is the absolute worst with these kinds of predictions. And boy does he love making them. I remember when he was convinced Antman 2 would make 750mil.
Fact is, nobody cares about ep9. Sure, it may make 1 billion. But that would also be a HUGE failure.
