Thanks guys, I haven’t seen it yet, but feel I understand exactly what you’re saying and thanks to this review I’ve adjusted my my mindset, for how I’ll be going into to see it
One thing though, if a film takes multiple viewings, to understand, I’d say that’s a failure on the part of the director
Just watched your review. Saw it last night. I loved it! And I appreciate where your comments and feelings are coming from. I know what Hector’s talking about. It took two years of repeated viewings to finally be able to watch that film as its own new landscape. And that’s when I finally, genuinely enjoyed it for what it strove to tell. Too much to enjoy a movie? Yes. But whatevs. Conversely, I ate up 98% of everything presented in BvS:DoJ. And I’m really bummed to start reading so many negative and so-so reviews this afternoon. I have tickets to see it with a non-comic book fan friend and a bunch of comic book geek friends Sunday. It’ll be interesting to hear everyone’s takes afterwards. And I’m looking forward to checking out your full review on Friday!
Shit, you guys seem sooo high because of that movie, if you know what I mean.
Long comment incomming :
All my friends didn’t have the same availability. So we slit in two (me being the most comic-book guy of the group I’ll go to both. One friday and one in april. But me being me, and the film coming out today (tomorrow) I bought a ticket for the first screening. To give you guys a little context. I’m from Paris, France and I’ve been watching you guys since the beginning so despite you not being able to express your feelings towards the movie. I know, I know or better yet, I can understand how you feel. It’s 2 am in Paris now, the screening is at 10:30 and I’m glad I got to watch this review before. Thank you guys for all the good work and please keep it this way. I’m going to see this movie 3 times no matter what. Thanks again !
Thank you. The amount of negative reviews really hurt and really put me in a place I was uncomfortable being. You guys reignited the passion. I just bought tickets for Thursday night. I want to understand what is making fans be like omg best film ever and some be like better spent on another film. I’ve decided that from now on I trust you guys to give me your honest opinion and thoughts.
Now just for fun I hated dc comics growing up with the exception of aquaman and batman. I grew up reading rom the spaceknight spiderman x men batman green lantern. I really went back to dc when new 52 launch and it made me dive back in to the history of the characters. I am a historian and I just applied my training for what I truly love. This movie not only opens the door for me to see the trinity but to let me see Aquaman. An Aquaman I sure will drive me to tears of joy. In my 20 yrs of reading comics I never thought I’d have a chance to see aquaman in live action. With the hints and teasing of Kirbys fourth world in the trailers I am over the moon with anticipation.
You guys really know what to say to make a man think and based on thus my first time viewing this film will leave me wanting more. I’m sure glad I now have tickets for Thursday and Friday now. Thank you for being the only site I truse for superhero news and reviews. Keep going.
Well, this review just added to the disappointment that most people who were hoping the reviews would be as good as the pre sales BvS has received. When you guys can’t give a definite thumbs up and require having to watch it again before giving your spoiler free analysis I knew this movie was in trouble from a crittics standpoint. Too bad, I was hoping for something that was not gonna be divisive like MOS (which I liked) but I guess that’s what DC stands for now, Divisive Cinema!
Haven’t seen it yet. Killing me because I planned to see it on 25th only but studies related stuff came up and my non-CB friends (heretics! :P) are holding me hostage since I have to travel 4 hours to reach my closest IMAX hall….
But you guys…you’re the perfect combination of fans and critics! I connected so much with your assessment of movie viewings (the heart wants what it wants) and of-course 2 viewings are a minimum for such an epic movie.
I’ll see it first week of April only and really looking forward to Ben’s interpretation of Bats. If nothing else, reviews notwithstanding, I hope this franchise really takes off and gives us an entire live action DC universe on the big screen.
And Hector – you are beautiful. Never let anyone tell you otherwise! :)
Only 1 more day for me!!!. By the way i must say that this is the only site to read, comment and discuss like normal people, or without serious haters or trolls, certain site has two articles one next to the other, they go like this: “Early Batman V Superman Reviews Are Largely Negative”, and “Why Civil War Is A Captain America Movie and Not Avengers 2.5”, the firts one totally destroying BvS, the second one prasing Civil War (with exclusive interviews of course)…c’mooon seriously? And i dont even want to reproduce some of the comments section…. So again good for you guys! you bring the stupid race to a stop as it should be, i love DC and Marvel, but Batman and Superman are my childhood friends, they will always be my favorites, and i must not let the Disney machine bring me down,..This movie is the one i’ve been waiting for.
I still keep having the feeling that we are all complaining a bit too much, being a bit too picky, but i guess that happens with these titans finally together.
And Superman dies.
And Lex Luthor names all the justice league members and gives them their logos.
Thank you guys for your initial reaction. You were able to put into perspective why critics are tearing the movie a part yet fans are blown away without spoiling it!
Thanks a lot guys….im from India…got the Thursday premiere show booked….totally understand what you guys are saying and where you are coming from! My point of view…im just happy they finally managed to put these 2 (or more) legendary characters together on screen! And yes…will need multiple viewings to kinda digest whats going on….excitement is on a high…but yes…measured…its the same for any movie as the release date nears…but certainly looking forward as a fan…
I’m not going to write Chris Terrio off for the complaints being hurled at the story, since this one can’t entirely be called his own, I’ll reserve judgement on that until Justice League hits. That being said, I honestly can’t get on board with Zack Snyder spearheading this universe, I’ve never been a fan of his work and having seen the movie myself, that hasn’t changed. I certainly hope the next wave of movies fare better, I’m holding out hope for Suicide Squad as I’ve enjoyed David Ayer’s work.
Agreed. I really think they need to take Snyder off this, I’m grateful he set up the universe and I appreciate the passion he has for it but it’s clearly time to move on.
I think Ayer’s work will be better received, how well? I don’t know but I think it will.
After all the BS and the obvious hit job this movie is enduring (Fuck you Disney) you guys really put everything in perspective THANK YOU. A complex and overwhelming experience of a movie is exactly what I wanted with these characters, I want to watch it multiple times and will be dissecting it for years.
Like I literally forgot 90% of Ultron the second I left the theater, this is not that kind of movie and anyone expecting it to be is way off base.
Came back from it. Guys, I don’t even know how to express it but let me try : I liked the movie, but I think in its grandeur it has huge flaws which I would love to discuss with you super friends. Looking back at your video, without giving anything away I think the main problem was the pace (nice one Augustin)… anyway waiting for your full review now guys :)
I bought my IMAX tickets long before any of the advanced screening reviews…so I’m invested! :) That being said I am a female fan but not an expert or superfan in the DC universe as say Hector, Adam, and Agustin (you guys rock !!). I have, however, watched all BTAS, STAS, DC movies involving the two, JLTAS, Dark Knight etc.
I am really hoping for a strong portrayal of Bruce Wayne/Batman by Affleck, which from what I’m reading and watching so far, will totally happen. I have been Team Batman all my life! But I have a soft spot for Superman, he’s a great foil to Batman and he’s a legend for a reason.
I have to say I’m not a fan of Henry Cavill as Superman…I think I keep thinking of boy-scout animated Superman and the Tim Daly voice…but I’m hoping this movie will make me like him more. I didn’t hate Man of Steel, but to me Christopher Reeve is still Superman and Amy Adams isn’t the Lois Lane I wanted. The Nolan trilogy was amazing and I think hard to beat. I am glad I won’t have to hear Christian Bale’s voice, but he was amazing in it and hard to beat.
Overall I am super excited to see the Justice League and the Wonder Woman movie regardless of how I feel once I leave BvS! Thanks again for an awesome review guys!
I was going to ask how the IMAX presentation was, but unfortunately it sounds like you guys weren’t able to see it in true IMAX scale if you saw it at the Burbank AMC. I’m looking forward to seeing it Friday.
Adam, Hector and Augustin :
No spoils but don’t read if you haven’t seen the movie
You’ve been warned
Get out now
Guys I’ve been thinking about it all day, couldn’t get close to what I didn’t like about the movie, or even better, what disturbed me. Augustin talked about the pace, I agreed with that already but (and I am 100% open to debate on this) I think what this Batman v Superman : Dawn of Justice movie is missing is : Batman and Superman. Again I’m open for debate but I would really like you guys to think about this for a second. For the two and a half hours of movie, How much Batman and Superman action (not necessarily combat) have we seen ? I’m just begging to think this through. Think about it for Friday’s full review
‘Till soon
I appreciate this channel and all the work you guys put in to give us the best shows possible. I haven’t even seen the movie yet but after I read critics reviews I had the same heartbreak Hector had. I’m gonna see this thing on Friday and Saturday, been hyped for about year so I hope I enjoy it. You guys are awesome!
your reaction video gives me hope. i was really bummed buy the reviews coming out, but i’m a little more optimistic now. so many people want to love this movie…oh well. seeing it this weekend.
It’s not as nearly as bad as what some are making it out it to be but it does have flaws. Big flaws. I think they tie back to Snyder as well. What I’m hoping for? They change directors because the DC universe has huge potential and Wonder Woman was out of this world brilliant. I think under Jenkins her characters solo film will be fantastic.
Go and see it and make up your own mind. This is just what I thought of it anyway.
With all due respect, it seems like you guys are going out of your way to make excuses for a film you didn’t really like. Either you loved it or you didn’t. Either it blew you away or it didn’t. If you come out of the movie confused, not knowing how you feel, even feeling guilty that you didn’t love it and have to go see it again because you don’t understand what you’re feeling, it seems to me the film did not win you over. I saw the film. I was hugely disappointed. I wanted to like it. There are some cool scenes in it, but overall, I did not like it — I thought it was bad. A lot of people did not like the movie but mention the number of cool scenes. That’s part of the problem. It seemed to me that the film had no real narrative structure and was instead a collection of sometimes seemingly random scenes spliced together. I think that’s what you guys mean with the awkward pacing. The pacing is awkward because there is no narrative structure. It’s like a collection of trailers, some scenes work better than others, but it’s not a good way to tell a story. There’s no narrative flow. And yes, Eisenberg is a talented actor, but that was not Lex Luthor. That was an entirely new creation.
This
I just saw it tonight, its AMAZING. Dont lower your expectations, its that GOOD.
The bad reviews and haters are just sad people.
WB must stick to their guns and trust Synder with JL. If people want fun and colourful movies then they should go back and watch superman returns or green lantern.
Solid 5/5
I saw the film last night and I unabashedly loved it. I’m sorry that Hector in particular didn’t seem to like the film all that much, but frankly when you bring so many expectations to a movie the way that Hector admitted that he did, it is impossible for any film to live up to that fantasy. Don’t evaluate the film based on what you think it *should* have been. That’s an unfair metric. Just accept the film for what it is and was trying to do and evaluate it on those terms.
I’m looking forward to the spoiler review later on because I’m also baffled by Adam’s comments about pacing issues, something I was actually expecting based on his comments (as well as other critics) but which I literally forgot about within five minutes because I was so caught up in the story (this was the shortest 2.5 hour movie I’ve ever seen (and I mean that it in a good way–it never dragged at all)). Again, I was caught up in the story that the movie was actually telling. I didn’t allow myself to be frustrated that it wasn’t matching up to the fantasy version of the story that I’ve been imagining in my head since 1989 (when I thought it would have been cool if Michael Keaton and Christopher Reeve were able to team up on screen). I didn’t allow myself to get caught up imagining what scenes were cut from the theatrical release that will eventually be available on the extended cut. I accepted the story that was being told and went with it, and it was a terrific experience.
