With $199.3 million in North America as of Monday, Venom will cross the $200m mark at the domestic box office either late tonight or very early tomorrow. That also means, amazingly enough, that the Tom Hardy/Michelle Williams superhero origin story will soon surpass the $202m domestic total (sans inflation) of The Amazing Spider-Man 2. Oh, and it’s tracking for a potentially record-smashing debut in China for a non-Avengers superhero movie. So, yes, it’s a hit, with a potential $700m+ global total (possibly above the $709m global cume of Amazing Spider-Man 2), and it’s only a matter of time before Sony announces a proverbial Venom 2. But due to how Venom was received and what kind of film it turned out to be, the sequel presents a most unusual artistic challenge.
