In just under a month, Ruben Fleischer’s Venom has earned $187 million domestic and a whopping $508m worldwide. So, yes, the Tom Hardy/Michelle Williams movie is a hit despite mediocre reviews and years of handwringing by folks like me (mea culpa) over the viability of a solo movie based around a Spider-Man villain. What looked on paper like Catwoman turned out to be The Mask, complete with a gonzo lead performance that almost justified the otherwise boilerplate origin story narrative. Come what may, the movie is huge, and the Spider-Verse pilot is now on a path to be more profitable than any of Sony’s Spider-Man movies.
