During the live panel for Star Wars Rebels creator Dave Filoni along with Tiya Sircar and Sam Witwer unveiled the brand-new trailer for season 3. The trailer revealed several new things, but the biggest reveal was the addition of Grand Admiral Thrawn. Thrawn, a character created by writer Timothy Zahn, is the primary villain of the Heir to the Empire sequel trilogy that takes place after Return of the Jedi. Since Disney’s acquisition of Lucasfilm, the Thrawn trilogy had been relegated to Star Wars Legends, the non-canon part of the Star Wars Universe. Grand Admiral Thrawn will be voiced by Lars Mikkelsen, the brother of Mads Mikkelsen who’s playing Galen Erso in Rogue One: A Star Wars Story.
With Thrawn joining Rebels, his position of Grand Admiral has officially been reinstated into canon. Timothy Zahn also announced (via video) that he is finishing a brand-new book called Thrawn, that will re-introduce the character into the current Star Wars continuity.
