I wonder what Rick’s safe word is. And I wonder if it will actually make Shane stop.
The Punisher definitely done this to him! >:P Who else with that Gun-click? Bullseye?
Oh it’s The Punisher alright! http://i2.wp.com/superheron…
Frank is such a unique character who needs to be handled very wisely to work, on every media whatsoever.
I remember how between 80’s and early 90’s one of his series (War journal) was quite unreadable, because it had no real story-line, and was nothing but a C-list action tv-series turned comic in which, episode by episode, you had “Punisher does Russians”, “Punisher takes on Jamaicans”, Punisher VS Italians”, and so on and on….
The fact is, Marvel has build an identity, as an editor, creating characters who are “men with superpowers” (in opposite to DC, who mostly has “Gods among men”), showing you the moral dilemmas, the feelings, the inner struggling of every single character… the Punisher doesn’t work like that.
He’s the quintessence of the monolithic character, in terms of feelings: if he was a god, then he’d be “Frank, the God of Hate, Commitment and Supreme Badassery”.
That aspect has made the fortune of the Punisher as the ideal partner/antagonist into other characters stories: because his being unmovable toward his mission, forces other characters moral compass to the limit, which makes the story very worth reading.
But from a storytelling standpoint, that means one very big limit for a Punisher series: if you put Frank in a predictable situation, you know EXACTLY what he’s gonna do: bad guys? he takes ’em out, no doubt about that; that is what the approach to Punisher has been for far too long, alas…
Then… some guy by the name of Garth Ennis, finally understood the keys to a good, VERY GOOD punisher story!
One: don’t focus too much on the punisher himself, as he gives little chances in terms of “feeling development”, and create interesting characters for him to interact (“partners”, antagonists, whatever).
Two: Put Frank into unpredictable situations, make every episode “what if..” style-oriented, so that the reader really cannot know where Frank is gonna be at the end of that journey, not before reading the story.
This two very simple rules have been the guide to the whole “Punisher Max” run by G. Ennis, which is (and will be, I fear) the best rendition of the character ever (I suggest everybody to read it, you’ll thank me endlessly).
He put the right “what if” question in EVERY SINGLE EPISODE of that run:
· what if the government tried to “use” the punisher?
· what if he discovers his only “friend” has betrayed him?
· what if someone does to him something which all of a sudden makes it very personal?
· what if he has to deal with the very lowest scumbags in terms of crime value?
· what if he has to deal with white-collars crimes?
· what if he has to deal with someone who “falls in love” for him?
· what if the Punisher wasn’t really born in central park?
· what if there’s something very wrong in Frank, since he was 14 years old?
· what if the police is on the haunt for him, how he deals with that?
· what if his enemy is a bunch of very vengeful women?
· what if, all of a sudden, he finds out he has something to lose again, since Central Park?
· if all his war is “punishment”, what would be Frank haunting the VERY responsible of his parent murderer?
· what his fellow military are on the haunt for him, how he deals with that?
· how can possibly Frank die?
I really really hope that, if a Punisher tv series has to be, someone is gonna keep in mind how you write a good punisher run, and how you absolutely don’t, which is something we, Punisher fans, are far too much used to.
Bang for buck that’s Frank. I feel they need to address humour. Someone getting fed to the fishes in the zoo. Punching a polar bear to rile it up against the bad guys. That is some funny stuff epically when frank comments on it.
I get you are more into “welcome back Frank” Garth Ennis style, which is very cool indeed too, very entertaining.
well.. to each is own buddy ;)
Not going to lie to you, I love it. But if I had to take one series it would be the max one. In the beginning, the cell and widowmaker these are the best Frank issues. In my opinion.
Felt he was rounded out quite well in welcome back Frank. But really came into his own with the max series.
what about “born” and “the slavers”…?
Oh god yes, absolutely. I could go on all day but would not get work done.
Every time I have seen this I have grown more and more excited. Not the casting choice I would have picked. But I don’t care, the list is too long of people I disagreed with actually doing quite well. But this is the comic I’ve always said should be filmed to show off what the punisher character is like and how awesome he is. The biggest problem I thought Frank had on screen was people buy revenge. But I’m not too sure they bought punishment. Killing the people that killed your family we are with you. Continuing you are on your own buddy.
But with this storyline, actually I friggin’ hope it’s this story come to think of it. I am basing this on a couple of images but hey. Big Frank has little Matt chained up and he’s going to find out how it really is. But don’t worry Matt the chains will be gone when you wake up.
