Ed Skrein is leaving the Hellboy reboot after an outcry over his casting.
Skrein, who is known for playing the villain in last year’s Deadpool, joined the cast of the Hellboy reboot last week, and he was to play rugged military member Major Ben Daimio, who in the comic books is Asian. Some on social media objected to the casting, calling it another example of Hollywood whitewashing a character. And after a mounting outcry, he decided to leave the project, sharing the news on Twitter Monday.

I fucking hate this world. These fuckers are the same people who want Idris Elba as Bond, because “that’s progressive”. I’m so fucking tired of these triggered snowflakes and their double standards.

I’m still waiting for Idris Elba to quit playing Heimdall.
Joking aside, I could care less about Heimdall. And that’s probably the problem. Normal people like you and I wouldn’t go out of our way to bitch about a character no one seems to care about.
If they made Batman or Spiderman a black dude, I would also probably get triggered. Since it’s a obvious push to piss off white people. And those are like the top 2 heroes of all time. But, honestly, how many people really cared about this character?
I could bet you anything 90% of the people complaining never even read the comic. All they heard was that some white guy is going to play a minority, and that’s a big no-no in PC world. When will Hollywood learn that simply changing the race/gender/sexuality of a character for the sake of diversity isn’t really a good thing? In fact, it might be a bad thing.
Just look at comic-books. I can’t really find a character they “PC’d” that didn’t make the numbers plummet. I think I even read a comment from some guy involved with comics where he basically admitted “yeah, this shit doesn’t work”. But they still push for it.0 likes-

You’re speaking absolute nonsense man. It’s not so much about the character, but rather the fact that Asians, blacks, latino, mexican people don’t have as much media representation in American entertainment fields as whites. So when you give the role of an Asian character to another white man, instead of to an Asian male (from a demographic that doesn’t get as much movie screentime), it is incredibly insulting.
Lmao, you sure are an easily offended little bitch, aren’t you? “It is incredibly insulting”. Right… when I went to Africa a couple of months ago, I was also very “insulted” that no white people were represented on TV. If you take offense over such a PETTY as fuck thing, you’re a goddamn moron.

You know what the difference between Africa and damned America is? Africa doesn’t have a VAST amalgam of ethnic cultures to the level that the USA does. That’s the big difference, genius.

“Africa doesn’t have a VAST amalgam of ethnic cultures to the level that the USA does. That’s the big difference, genius.”
I never talked about the US, “genius”. Fucking hell, you’re such a sore loser. Get fucked. I was talking about BRITAIN, you fuck. And BRITAIN doesn’t have the “VAST amalgam of ethnic cultures to the level that the USA does” EITHER. So what the fuck is the difference? Why should British movies represent tiny minorities (Black British people are only about 2%) when Africans shouldn’t? Despite the fact that many African countries have more white people than Britain has black people? Seriously what in the fuck, is the fucking difference, you hypocritical fuck?0 likes

They have enough of their own movies, they shouldn’t be demanding to placed in every movie now, just for the sake of “diversity”

They have “enough”? Tell that to the, what, 10 movies with black characters that come out every year versus the 50+ with white leads and casts that come out in that same year.

Representation in media for minorities is still generally greater than the actual percentage of minority people in the U.S. population which is about 13% African American, 17% Latino/Hispanic, and 6% Asian. So it makes sense that they are not anywhere near being equally represented as whites in media… they don’t make up much of the population. It would actually be more insulting to reality to falsely overrepresent any group. In another comment just now you talked about basically 50 movies with predominantly white people coming out each year for every 10 movies with black lead actors, and, well… there’s 6 times as many white people in the country, so it’s not exactly unfair in its numerical representation than is it?

So you’re saying because there are more whites in America, the majority of media needs to be tailored to only them? That this gives Hollywood the excuse to white-wash and take roles away from Asian, black or hispanic actors? That is the most absolutely asinine thing that I have heard.
And news flash: these are MOVIES we are talking about. Most movies, especially a damned HELLBOY movie, don’t represent reality.
No, I was speaking about numbers in general, not about changing out characters of a specific racial or ethnic origin and putting white people in those roles instead. And I didn’t say media needs to be tailored to the predominant large portion of the population but it also doesn’t have to be some conspiratorial racist agenda for the majority of media to basically represent the actual majority of people in this country or any other. I wouldn’t go to Japan and demand equal amounts of white actors there or go to Bollywood film productions in India and ask for more representation for whites or blacks either. Just use common sense rather than operating from some nobler than thou point of view and it makes sense.

Again, comparing Japan (which is a country made up of 99% of Japanese citizens) to a country like the United States (which is made up of MANY DIFFERENT COLORS AND CREEDS OF PEOPLE) is a horrible fallacy, an uneducated strawman and incredibly blase.

I understand the sociological wonder that is the U.S. and appreciate what you enjoy typing IN CAPITAL LETTERS to signal your apparent enlightenment. The point is that media represents the majority of its audience most of the time, and if anything there is more than enough representation in media from this country that gives 13% black, 17% latino, and 6% Asian that amount of representation. In fact they get more than that, which is totally cool. Again, I’m not the one complaining and saying there’s an issue in general
with 50 movies of white lead actors for every 10 with more so black lead actors, because that actually represents the U.S. Population. I’m educated by the actual numbers not social justice warrior posturing and grandstanding.1 like -
You can keep on bringing up actual societal population values all you want, but again – movies are largely fictional.
Yes, media represents the majority of its audience most of the time. But in a country where there are more cultures that are being catered to, explored — should the majority be the only ones represented? Shouldn’t representation of whites, blacks, hispanics and asians be even and fair, in an attempt to showcase all sides of an inclusive culture? You’re trying to approach this argument with numbers but it makes you look socially ignorant to the plight of those at the bottom.

First off, the majority culture isn’t the only one represented, it’s just what is represented somewhat of a majority of the time… Because that actually makes sense. And to answer your question, no, I don’t agree that media must be artificially balanced so that equal time and representation be given to all cultures, creeds, and points of view with indifference to actual demand, because I don’t think policing media to make sure it shows everyone an equal amount of the spotlight represents the real world, represents the will of the audience, or represents behaving like actual mature adults who can handle the actual reality they live in. The market dictates what is made and what sells, not saps on soapboxes here on Superhero news.

Wait… What is it exactly that you want?
Can you describe to us what your perfect representation of characters in American entertainment should look like?
As far as I can tell, you want 10% of whites, 10% of blacks, 10% asian, etc? Is that fair representation?Did it ever cross your mind that Hollywood (run by money as everything else) is only mirroring what people actually want?
Could it be that the reason why Hollywood doesn’t put an Asian as a lead in every other movie is because people just don’t respond to that? If Hollywood is doing something, it’s because they make money from it. The end. They don’t care about white, black, or brown.. All they see is green.I mean, they tried it. They tried your fantasy representation in comic-books. They turned some of their biggest characters gay, black, into a woman, etc. They tried that. And it has failed them. Numbers are plummeting. People just don’t respond to it. It’s only a matter of time before they learn that.
Why aren’t they fighting for equal representation of whites in the music industry? More precisely, hip hop and rap. Because their target demo is black. Simple.

And what’s wrong with the vast amounts of cultures and people wanting to see more of themselves on the big screen? The reason white people object to this and berate the very idea of this (not saying you are one of them but still) is that THEY aren’t the ones that deal with representation issues.

There’s nothing wrong with wanting to see more of yourself on screen. If so, go make and finance a movie as you’d see fit, don’t bitch about it like a petulant child that it’s unfair.

How can black people/asian people etc “finance” their own movies in order to match and even out the playing field of film with whites when:
1) The majority of these corporations are run by majority caucasian people
2) The economic and social disadvantages minorities come coupled with in comparison to most of middle/upper white America
3) Studios should just seek out to represent more PoC in order to turn much more of a potential profit.
I’m “bitching” about it because, apparently unlike you, race just isn’t something that is a hashtag. It’s my way of life. It’s what I’m reminded of day in and day out by media/government/etc. Is it so bad to call out the inequalities in film? Or society?
Stop getting damn mad that people have problems with society as it stands now and aren’t morally/socially content like yourself.

You are operating out of an ideology in which the playing field must be evened to ensure not just equality of opportunity but equality of outcome in evening representation in media. I do not share that same ideology. “Studios should”… I don’t dictate what should or shouldn’t happen in Hollywood. There is not equal representation of all religions, races and creeds in popular movies, music, and television… Because there is no where near equal representation of them among the audience or population. You don’t see this as relevant in deciding to either be outraged or not – I do see it as highly relevant though, and so we will fundamentally disagree.
And sure, there are plenty of problems with society. As a social worker who is working class and works with predominantly working class and poor individuals of all backgrounds I am familiar with there not being even playing fields in life. I just don’t believe that demanding media to represent my own personal experience as equally and as often as that of the majority of this or any population is a worthwhile endeavor. And I mentioned Japan and India because such a standard as yours, if it’s morally correct to uphold, should be demanded to be applied in every country then, even if with a 99% racial majority because according to you those numbers don’t matter. Besides, there are certainly religions and creeds there not evenly represented in media. And we will make sure they are so that minority religions, races, and creeds of all kinds are represented equally there and in all countries too. It wouldnt be pragmatic, realistic, or accurately representational, it would actually seem forceful, inorganic, and a bit militant, just as the idea of artificially equally representing all religions, races, cultures and creeds does here.

1) how does that prove anything? Equal opportunity is not the same as equal outcome.
2) Asians in the US earn MORE than whites. They also have a higher standard of living and are more likely to be educated. So much for being “oppressed by the white man”.
3) So which is it? You just proved that studios WANT PoC in their movies for economical reasons, yet you whine about them not taking enough PoC in the same fucking breath.
You’re a lunatic.
“race just isn’t something that is a hashtag. It’s my way of life.”
Holy fucking shit, you weak piece of shit.. “your way of life”. Get the fuck over yourself, child. Of course a psychopath such as yourself defines himself by race. You’re such an unsuccessful and weak loser that you couldn’t possibly be defined by the CONTENT OF YOUR CHARACTER… no, instead… for the weakminded superficial bigot that you are… you define yourself by the COLOR OF YOUR SKIN.
I mean, who exactly is the racist here?I know you’re used to getting praise and approval for your fake moral superiority, as it’s all very clearly ideological to you. But here, you can’t possibly expect for people to take your lies and rhetoric even remotely seriously. Your ideology sucks. You are obviously ignorant of reality. Heck, you’re probably 20 year old student bathing in privilege and unearned advantages, yet you complain about how big a victim you are. That’s how I know you’re just a kid. Because ADULTS would have long faced the REAL world by now, and realized there is NO possibility of getting through this world with your weak and pathetic victimhood mentality. I actually feel sorry for you… because as a result of your retarded ideology, you will achieve nothing and in turn blame your own failures on others.

“Most movies, especially a damned HELLBOY movie, don’t represent reality.”
Then WHY the fuck, should said “movies” even represent the reality that the US is a “diverse” place to begin with? After all, movies “don’t represent reality” do they? Fucking idiot.0 likes
First of all, I’m not American. And that plays a lot into what I’m about to say.
I think blacks are over-represented in Hollywood. Because of affirmative action ofc. I always thought there were more blacks in USA than there actually is. That’s because everything I knew about America was from TV and movies. ‘Till I got into researching it a bit.
I would say that Asians are represented in an accurate way. Unlike blacks. And why is that? Well because Asians aren’t as bitchy as blacks. Blacks always want special treatment. Asians don’t want to spend their time on nonsense like that. They have better things to do.
Now, like it or not, America is a white country. The majority of its people are white, the founding father meant it to be a white country and throughout history it was always white. Ofc whites are going to be in the majority of things. Just because there’s a whole bunch of cultures and nationalities and races in America, doesn’t mean it’s a “melting pot” of people. Btw, fun fact, the founding fathers I mentioned before… They used that “melting pot” sentence as a “melting pot of white Europeans”. But, liberals took it and ran with it as all races. But I digress.
I agree, whites shouldn’t play Asians/black/latino or any other character. I just wish everyone else would be as consistent. I just want accuracy.
If there is a need for more black comic-book characters… Don’t take existing ones and turn them black.. Make up a new one.

I hate the fact that he’s playing him. Or what they did with Valkyre! It’s utter nonsense. If they want more blacks on screen then create new black characters and make a movie about them. Don’t steal our white characters.

There’s an incredible difference between casting a black actor in the role of a character who was always white and who’s character doesn’t rely on his race and changing a character who is race reliant to a white man/female.
I suggest you learn what the difference is before you go on another tirade about “snowflakes” and “triggered” people.

Fuck that. According to people like you, non-white characters are “always” defined by their race (which isn’t even remotely true, and even if it were, that would be fucking pathetic. Who defines himself by race?), and with white characters, it “never matters”. Double standards at its finest. Btw, Bond has ALWAYS been British. He has ALWAYS come from a stereotypical British family. In case you don’t fucking know, British people are WHITE. So yeah, even according to your moronic “logic” (or lack thereof), Bond should absolutely always be a white guy.
People like you push your shallow rhetoric and complain about complete non-issues. Your deluded opinions are a cancer on the world.2 likes-
I’m not saying that they’re ALWAYS defined by their race, but a lot of these characters are. Besides that flawed point, there’s much more white representation in media than PoC representation, which causes offense because, surprise surprise, one is greater than the other in terms of media exposure.
“In case you don’t fucking know, British people are WHITE.”
lmaooo So there are not black British men and women? Asian British men and women? Muslim British men and women? Get out of here, your argument sounds just as idiotic as the first time.

“I’m not saying that they’re ALWAYS defined by their race, but a lot of these characters are.”
And that just goes to prove how fucking shallow you are.“So there are not black British men and women?”
First, who said anything about “women”? Second, are there not white people living in non-white countries? What’s the difference? Also, “muslim” is not a race, you lunatic.
Britain is more than 90% white, which is a fact you obviously don’t know because you’re ignorant and have no idea about European countries. Not only that, but Bond comes from a traditional British family, which means he comes from a family line from a time where Britain was 99% white. In other words, you would be okay if they represent the 1% as the lead role… It’s clearly not an accurate reflection, and if you’re going to say “yeah, but it’s precisely BECAUSE they’re only 1% that they should be represented!”, then why in the fuck does that same horseshit logic not apply to the 1% of white people living in Asian countries? Shouldn’t they be represented? Oh wait, that doesn’t matter, because “there is more white representation overall so there are different standards”. Oh right… You just fucking proved that you have DOUBLE standards. Also, “not always matters” you say? Okay then, give me ONE black comic book character that would be acceptable to change race and give me one white character who’s defined by his or her race.
You are delusional. Your opinion is retarded and hypocritical. You have admitted to having double standards. I have ZERO respect for morons such as yourself who willingly push this rotten agenda because it makes you feel good and special, when in reality you just ruin everything with your fake moral grandstanding. Fuck off…
0 likes -
But wait. You just said all Bond has to be is British. Now you’re saying that its a PREREQUISITE that he be white? That sounds absolutely asinine.
And, again, you cannot compare the United States to any Asian country. 1% of the population in Japan being white is entirely different than almost 20% of the population in America being black or hispanic. Get your ignorant logic out of here please and use FACTS when you speak. Or do not do it at all.

“You just said all Bond has to be is British”
I never said that, but keep putting words in my mouth you delusional liar.“Now you’re saying that its a PREREQUISITE that he be white?”
I haven’t said that either, you psycho. I am merely following your retarded understanding of “logic”.“And, again, you cannot compare the United States to any Asian country.”
Last time I fucking checked, dipshit, I haven’t. Bond is a BRITISH character. Britain is like 93% white. It’s not a “culturally diverse” country. It just ISN’T. So if you make the argument that Asian countries shouldn’t “have to” feature diverse characters “because it’s only 1%”, then why should Britain? When only about 1 or 2% is black? It’s the EXACT same thing yet you persist Britain should have different rules. And that proves you’re a total fucking HYPOCRITE of the highest order. Please tell me… What’s the exact percentage? Where do you draw the line? Should countries with 98% native demographics never feature their 2% minorities? Or is that only at the 99th percentile? So you’re saying 1% minorities shouldn’t be represented because their demographic is too small? How racist of you.
Seriously, where’s the fucking line? 1%… or 5%? or maybe like 30%?
Your principles are weak and your morals are shit.
You very clearly do not have strong standards AT ALL, because you’re a whiny delusional bully who complains about petty shit to make yourself feel better and evaluated. You’re not a good person. You don’t have good morals. Your standards are shit and your behavior is toxic.0 likes -
Also, you didn’t answer the fucking question, coward… Give me one example of a black character which you would be okay with changing their race. And give me one example of a white character of which his or her race is essential.

I agree with Seb.
White characters are never defined by race unless they’re a white supremacist or a nazi. Hell, not even nazis. I believe there’s a black nazi soldier in the latest CoD game.
White characters in comic-books are up for grabs because none of them are defined by their race. Whereas the major black characters in comic-books are always defined by their race. Black Panther, Luke Cage, Black Lightning, John Stewart. And those characters that aren’t necessarily defined by their race, like Cyborg, should also be up for grabs? Who’s to say Cyborg should be black? Everything he is could easily be played by a white guy. Popular high-school football athlete, rich scientist father… Why should he be black?
Again, I don’t want to see a white Cyborg. I’m simply calling out the hypocrisy of people. Whites in America shouldn’t complain when their character is being replaced by a different race, but you better lay off them asian and black roles white people. That’s a big no-no.
And I also hate the stupid argument from these people like.. “why does it matter if he’s a different race? Are you unable to identify with it because of the different race?” And the worst thing is that they don’t even realize the irony.
