on Fox fires back at ‘Fantastic Four’ director Josh Trank, comments on the future of the franchise

It’s been a bad weekend for Fantastic Four, and I’m not just talking about its poor box office performance. It all started on Thursday night, when director Josh Trank took to Twitter to distance himself from the movie. Trank quickly deleted that tweet, but it lives on forever thanks to the magic of the internet:

Now, Chris Aronson, Executive Vice President at 20th Century Fox, has responded to Trank’s tweet. Here’s what he had to say in a statement given to The Wrap:

“We stood behind Josh’s vision for the film as we stand behind all of our filmmakers at Fox.”

In a separate interview with Variety, Aronson commented on the future of the Fantastic Four franchise.

“We have a lot to look forward to in our comicbook character universe,” said Aronson. “We may find different ways to feature these characters in the future, but it’s early and we’ll have to see what form that takes.”

    You ever hear of Chris Aronson, franchise visionary for superhero properties? Right. No Fiege-like over-arching vision, no decent films. This…is why you fail, Fox.

      First Class and DoFP were better than any MCU film. Lacking an overarching vision was not what killed this movie.

    with the movie’s current performance and given the utter dislike from the fans, if the fantastic four stays at fox i have no doubt they will end up in cartoon form…

      yeah, i think that, since fox is currently negotiating with marvel about xmen’s tv rights it could mean that they could consider selling the FF back to marvel, i mean, marvel already got daredevil from fox, along ghost rider and punisher from other studios, so i say its just a matter of time before they also get the FF back.

    This movie makes me sad. For years I’ve wanted an Ultimate Fantastic Four style movie and this…was kinda it…and just the way they did it really didn’t work at all :/ I strongly believe UFF would make a great movie if it was done in a more light tone and such but….this kinda ruined any chance of that happening :|

    Fox has a looooooong history of meddling with their superhero directors and screwing up their movies. This is no surprise.

    And in the last few years, Hollywood has gone down this road where every single director who has one decent movie then gets bumped into these major franchise films. Like Marc Webb going from 500 Days of Superman directly to Spiderman. Gareth Edwards makes Monsters and goes direct to Godzilla.

    Going from these smaller budget and indie movies to billion dollar franchises is not going to be an easy jump for all these guys with limited experience. For every Collin Trevorrow knocking it out of the park with Jurassic World, you’re going to have a couple Josh Trank type failures.

    When you add a overbearing, meddling studio to an inexperienced director. Is this really a surprise to anyone?

      I thought Gareth Edwards was very successful with Godzilla. I mean, yes it didn’t work for a lot because of the slow pacing but he achieved what he wanted to and same with Colin Treverrow. And I believe they both were successful because the studio and director didn’t have disputes through out production and each trusted the other’s abilities. Marc Webb’s film was unfortunately a victim of the studio editing the sh*t out of his film, trying to make it about world building and Fox did the same with Trank’s except, I have no clue what the reason was. And it’s a damn shame because both the films that were unsuccessful had stellar casts, whom I would’ve loved to see for many future films.
