For the fifth year in a row, a superhero entry from Marvel and Disney has kicked off the summer box office in high style.
This time, the spoils belong to James Gunn’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, which debuted to $145 million from 4,347 theaters over the weekend — more than 54 percent ahead of the first film — for an early global total of $427.6 million. Males fueled the movie (56 percent), while 40 percent of ticket buyers were under the age of 25.

Lol yeah right. I have a hard time believing these numbers are real. 130 seems more reasonable maybe even 125 but 145? No way.

I’m surprised Suicide Squad had a bigger worldwide opening weekend than GOTG2 ($267M vs $251.1M)

Gotg2 didn’t open worldwide the same day. Since the first gotg made more money then suicide squad and this one is doing better, it’s a safe bet gotg 2 will make far more money

“Since the first gotg made more money then suicide squad”
True, but just to play devil’s advocate, SS actually outgrossed GOTG1 in all markets except in China, where SS was banned. The China-factor has been huge the past few years.

just to play devil’s advocate, gotg was a movie starring superheroes even comic fans barely knew and chris pratt who wasnt exactly a movie star, a talking raccoon and a tree. The last time batman and the joker were in a movie together they made over a billion dollars alone. add in half naked harley, flash, flash rogues, killer croc, rogues, jared leto and a half dozen dc characters and will frickin smiff and they still failed to make more then gotg1. thats kinda crazy when you think about it.

Crazy indeed at first glance. However the “iconic characters” argument is flawed, having a well-known character is NOT a guarantee for success. Batman Begins and Superman Returns were not big profits (and the latter likely lost money). Suicide Squad nearly outgrossed their COMBINED box office tally.
Also, once again, Suicide Squad was banned in China. Where it played, Suicide Squad outgrossed GOTG.

coulda shoulda woulda.
point is that gotg2 opened to more money. gotg opened to more money, and both films will go on to make more money then ss.
Nobody forced ss to put a kabuki character with no purpose or character arc into the movie so that the chinese wouldn’t accept it or whatever.0 likes -
“gotg2 opened to more money. gotg opened to more money”
Actually, neither of those are true. SS made more opening weekend worldwide than both GOTG’s.
actually gotg and gotg2 both had larger domestic openings then suicide squad. If you want to talk worldwide then gotg 1 and gotg 2 both made more money worldwide then ss. if you want to talk critical acclaim, then gotg and gotg 2 both got better ratings then ss. if you want to talk a hundred other categories then gotg and gotg 2 both did better then ss.
interesting how you brought up openings, then skipped worldwide openings, where SS outgrossed both GOTG’s
0 likes -
let me get this straight.
you think suicide squad had a larger box office then gotg?
are you sure you know what you are talking about?0 likes -
operative word was openings. SS > GOTG (1&2) in worldwide opening weekend.
and everywhere it played, SS outgrossed GOTG 1
0 likes -
buh. I’ve already explained to you that gotg didnt open worldwide on the same day like ss did before their bad review embargo could be lifted, i don’t know how to explain it any simpler.
lets just agree that gotg made way more total box office money then suicide squad and gotg 2 will make far more then suicide squad box office money and call it a day.

coulda shoulda woulda.
point is that SS opened to more money and went on to make more money than GOTG1 wherever SS played.
Nobody forced GOTG1/2 to do an international rollout as opposed to a global debut.0 likes -
are you okay?
wait you know gotg made more money then ss right???????????????????????0 likes -
and audiences that could actually watch both SS and GOTG in theaters have spoken with their wallets, more paid to see SS.
lol. nobody forced dceu to put katana in the film to serve zero purpose. no one forced them to make a movie china wouldn’t accept.
could should woulda didn’t.
gotg made more money. period.
did you hear vol 2 is up to 630 million already?
lets revisit this when it beats suicide squad in a bit.0 likes -
How embarassing would it be if Vol.2 couldn’t pass SS without China?

china china china
whats embarrassing about being critically and financially far superior to ss?
i forget, what was s.s. rt score again?0 likes -
Suicide Squad has won more Academy Awards than the entire Marvel Cinematic Universe
and last year’s Ghostbusters was “certified fresh” by Rotten Tomatoes, ’nuff saidmic drop

actually you should probably pick your little mic back up because big hero six won an oscar for best animated film of the year. suicide squad won an oscar for croc’s make up.
btw still think guardians won’t make as much as suicide squad? lol0 likes -
Now you’re just grasping for straws.
Big Hero 6 is not part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.0 likes -
umm actually you should educate yourself. here let me help. tony stark easter eggs “tadashi” as one of his a.i.s in age of ultra. sorry but mcu has an oscar. deal with it.

yup, you’re definitely grasping for straws
bye felicia0 likes -
hey btw didn’t gotg 2 blow ss out of the water and make more money this weekend. lol bye felicia

…that awkward moment when felicia realizes Vol.2 still hasn’t outgrossed SS without China.
the awkward moment you realize gotg 2 already surpassed the domestic totals of ss and batman v superman
0 likes -
domestic? lol, you were just grasping for straws, and now you’re cherry picking. worldwide, the DCEU’s first 3 movies have outgrossed the MCU’s first 3 by $800 million.
bye felicia

actually you don’t have a clue what you are talking about felicia, but you can waddle off if you like. do you know what return on investment means? no? let me explain. marvels LOWEST performing movie antman was more profitable then ANY movie in the dceu.
Let me know if you need me to explain it to you further.

The problem with your graph is that it assumes the studio collects 40% of international revenue, which we know is not true for China (approx. 25% or less goes to the studio). So it’s definitely inaccurate data. Also the data is not up to date, where’s SS?
Bye Felicia.
if you have your own proof that dceu movies have a better ROI then mcu movies then provide it.
Whats that?
you don’t have a single shred of proof?
well then that is a fail and i win.
bye felicia.0 likes -
Win? lol. The fact that you used an outdated graph with clearly inacurrate data as “proof” gets you an automatic L.
bye feLicia
yeah so basically you don’t have ANY proof so we have to go by my evidence. I win. buh bye felicia. don’t waste my time unless you have a better ROI graph.

Did you know that if Wonder Woman makes at least $650M, the DCEU’s first 4 movies will have outgrossed the MCU’s first 4 by over $1 Billion dollars. I’d take that over your inaccurate graph any day (you really gotta stop using that foolish graph).
bye felicia

so you are saying dceu might have been a competition for marvel almost a decade ago when marvel was fertilizing the ground of cinematic universes? cool. how come they can’t compete today? dr. strange made more money then superman. guardians had a bigger opening then wonder woman and ironman3 made more money then batman and superman put together.
btw don’t think i didn’t notice that you FAILED to find a better graph proving me wrong.
thats yet another fail. i win.
ba ha ha
bye felicia0 likes -
Can’t compete? lol. Wonder Woman just had a bigger opening weekend than every single MCU debut.
U must like holding L’s, you just got another after your graph fiasco.bye felicia

“Wonder Woman just had a bigger opening weekend than every single MCU debut.”
remind me how much “the avengers” debut made again opening weekend.
ba ha ha
yet another fail.
three fails and you are out.
game set match
I win! just like i always win.
you weren’t even competition for me bruh.0 likes -
lol. nice try junior. Avengers was a team up movie rather than a debut or origin of any superhero. Between the MCU and DCEU, the biggest solo origin movies are Man of Steel and Wonder Woman ($100M+ opening), while Iron Man is third (<$100M opening).
check mate bruh
Are you still here?
Bro sit down. You lost. Your quote was false. The avengers was the debut. Tell me when ruffalo hulk debuted on screens? Lol. You lost. 3 fails. 3 strikes I win. Lol0 likes -
wow, you ok? you’re really out to lunch. The MCU Hulk debuted in The Incredible Hulk in 2008, not in Avengers 2012. Norton and Ruffalo played the same role.
Can’t believe I had to explain that to you. You must really like holding L’s
bye felicia0 likes -
Are you stupid? Are you out to lunch? Ruffalo hulk didnt debut until avengers and the avengers didn’t debut until the avengers therefore your statement was a fail. Sit down. Only a woman continues to argue when she knows she’s wrong.

“Ruffalo hulk didnt debut until avengers”
And in the context of this insightful discussion, the Hulk (regardless of actor) made his MCU debut in 2008, not 2012.
Bye Felicia

wow you really are that stupid. just like a woman you continue to argue even tho you know you lost. lol. awwwww thats sad. Just remember for the next time that you aren’t on my level. your statement was false anyway you look at it. “the avengers” was the debut of the avengers. hold this L and never forget the name of the dude that outmaneuvered you and outsmarted you. ba ha ha ha
0 likes -
so you’ve given up on the Ruffalo-Hulk angle. Chalk it up with the rest of your L’s, such as “Big Hero 6 is MCU” and your disproven graph. lol.

awwwww its still trying.
sad. bigly.
tell me what movie the avengers “debuted” in?
tell me what mcu movie mark ruffalo “debuted” in?
lol0 likes -
(that awkward moment when abkinxoc realizes that the Hulk made his MCU debut in 2008)

that wasn’t what i asked you stupid. try to pay attention this time. i asked you;
1. what mcy movie did the actor mark ruffle make his “debut”
2. what mcu movie did the avengers make their “debut”these are simple questions any moron can answer.
lol you’re still here? bruh, you already took an L for forgetting Norton played Hulk 1st in the MCU. you’re clearly triggered, and creepy AF, let it go
bye Felicia

bitch you aint fooling nobody.
you hold on to this L
because we both know you can’t tell me what mcu movie buffalo “debuted” in and what mcu movie avengers “debuted” in.
be a man
only a bitch can’t admit when she is wrong lol.
you a man or a bitch?
only a bitch would change the subject rather then answer the question, so i guess we will see which you are by your reply.

…yup, u mad
“buffalo” lol, and what’s with the quotations around “debuted”?0 likes -
sorry i thought you were smart enough to realize that buffalo was spell checked to buffalo. not that big of a stretch of your mental faculties is it? also i thought you were smart enough to realize that you were the first one to use the word debut so i am quoting you. try to keep up. for that matter you failed yet again to answer the question
“what mcu film did mark ruffalo debut in?”
or the question
“what mcu film did the avengers “debut” in?”\so i guess those are two more fails for you and still zero fails for me.
i win!
yay!0 likes -
