Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 delivered a very big weekend for Marvel Studios in North America. The film officially earned $146,510,104 in its domestic opening weekend. That figure shows tremendous growth in brand interest with a 55% increase over the first film’s $94.3 million opening in 2014.
GotG Vol. 2‘s domestic opening is the fifth best ever for Marvel Studios and the highest opening for any of the studio’s films that do not feature Robert Downey, Jr. as Iron Man. In the broader superhero genre, $146.5 million is the best opening frame for a film that does not include Iron Man, Batman, or Spider-Man.

It’s gonna be close, it opened surprisingly low in China ($48M) which was a key market for Marvel’s other billion-dollar movies. How it holds up over the next month vs the competition will really decide if it can hit a billion.

It’s almost double the first one’s opening, and it’s already at about half of what the first one ended up making there at the end of it’s run. If it has strong legs over there as the first one did, it can make a considerable ammount there alone, and it’s making more basically everywhere, so I would say it’s a safe bet. Surely it’s legs in north america are what’s most important right now, but at least 400M is all but guaranteed. Making 600M worldwide isn’t that difficult nowadays, especially for movies with such big openings like this one had, not to mention the good critical reception.

It all depends on its legs. The first GOTG opened in August & no summer blockbusters to contend with. This one will have to deal with Alien, Pirates of the Carribean, Baywatch, and then Wonder Woman over the next month, not to mention some minor competition with King Arthur this weekend. Last year, Civil War (which also opened early May) had the benefit of a much larger opening weekend to eventually get it to its billion.

Yes, I do agree. It’s impossible for this movie to have the same kind of legs the first one had. But I doubt it will have weak ones, especially given the MCU’s average. And that’s why I truly think it will reach a billion. Add to that the fact that this is only the second super hero movie of the year, so oversaturation won’t affect this one that much. We’ll have to come back here when all is said and done.
