The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences will have three superhero films to consider for this year’s Best Animated Feature Oscar®. Incredibles 2, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, and Teen Titans Go! To The Movies are among the 25 films that have been submitted for consideration.
Disney has also submitted Ralph Breaks the Internet. Since that film features at least one Marvel cameo (Iron Man), superheroes could be found in up to 80% of this year’s animated nominees.
More likely, however, the cap is 60%, as Teen Titans Go! has little chance of securing a nomination. Incredibles 2, bolstered by strong reviews and billion-dollar box office receipts, will certainly be nominated while Ralph Breaks the Internet and Spider-Verse are both solid contenders.
The first Wreck-It Ralph was nominated in the Best Animated Feature category in 2012, ultimately losing the Oscar® to brave (I’m not sure how that happened either). If the sequel is as good as it looks, then it should pick up a nomination.
Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse has some terrific buzz heading into its December 14 release. If it lives up to the hype, the Sony Pictures film could be the first Marvel or DC adaptation to be nominated in the category.
