James Gunn has been fired from Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. Disney made the call after older tweets from Gunn containing tasteless jokes about rape and pedophilia resurfaced last night.
Walt Disney Studios Chairman Alan Horn confirmed the firing in a statement.
“The offensive attitudes and statements discovered on James’ Twitter feed are indefensible and inconsistent with our studio’s values, and we have severed our business relationship with him.”

James Gunn ran his mouth about people with viewpoints he doesn’t agree with and one of them bit back. What they found was not one, not two, not three, but SEVERAL absolutely disgusting comments about pedophilia, AIDS, and rape. Yes they’re comments from a long time ago but the subject matter is heinous and the quantity (which no one is talking about) throws the “one stupid slip up” argument out the window.
And I don’t recall asking him to be fired, nor did I insinuate that he should be, so take that up with someone else. Mouthing off has a price, maybe Gunn should’ve thought about that.

From what I understand, he got into it with some political people on Twitter yesterday. They decided to look through his old tweets for “dirt” and found plenty! Gunn deleted a lot of them and apologized last night, but the screenshots live on.

Even though I don’t agree with their reasons, I think this is a good thing. GOTG’s quality severely dropped from vol 1 to vol 2, 2 was terrible to me but I really liked the first one. Hopefully the next director doesn’t get drunk off GOTG’s success to much and returns them to form.
Sean Gerber now has permission from Disney to scold Gunn for these comments.
Or just ignore bad press as usual.
I read about 20 of his TEN THOUSAND deleted Tweets this morning. They would make Deadpool cringe. Seems like the only reason he stopped was because he got the Guardians gig. The deleted timeframe matches up roughly with his hiring.
Well I love Gunn’s style and now that he is somewhat of a pariah (presumably maybe not) I hope he takes the chance to make some original fantasy/sci fi content. There is criminally little of this these days in the reboot, sequel, prequel, remake, comic book culture we are in. Would love for him to create a unique vision.
Gerber responded on his junk site by saying this:

Here’s a guy who had no problem tossing DC fans under the bus for that stupid BP/RT sabotage gimmick, had no trouble ripping James Cameron a new one in a story he didn’t fully read, and had no trouble burying Dark Knight fans by telling them adjusted inflation numbers are “flawed math”, but all he can say about this grown man joking about fucking children is “tasteless.”
And these comments, mind you, were AFTER Disney made the call to dump him. So basically Gerber waited for permission to cover this story and all he’s got to say is “tasteless.”

Do you know how many ‘news’ sites sat on this story hoping it would go away?
Id like someone to make a story about that appalling fact.Gizmodo, who would have been on top of this story if it had been anyone other than a director for a D-ney film, waited until very late in the afternoon to release the articles. This was all known late last night.
But now the only thing that seems important is the right getting away with things while the left pay. Thats the takeaway. Makes me sick.
Is he sorry? Maybe. But a 40 year decided to tweet out thousands of times about rape and pedophilia. Thats a person that needs serious therapy.

James Gunn is a trained and proven film director before anything else. Did the tweets affect his work? Did the tweets affect the content of said work? Did the tweets affect customers in a negative way to Disney before said tweets where brought to light?
The answer to these questions are, no they didn’t.
Im a firm believer of separating art from the artist. Many painters during the 1500’s-1800’s were odd and mentally disturbed by todays standards. If a world renowned painter cut his own ear off today the media would have a field day. Yet we regard such art and artists in the highest of regards that is taught at basic school level.
Im not saying what Gunn did here was right, however there is a clear conversation into social media witch hunts that needs to be addressed. Gunn was heralded as one of the great directors of our time less than 24 hours ago. Now due to tweets made before even the MCU was conceived he’s been punished. He is allowed to express his views in any way he likes. If you don’t like that, don’t support his work.
What makes this worse is this was political retaliation. In short Gunn lost a decade of lives work due to his political views and was witch hunted for it by Trump supporters. This is what worries me the most. I’m British we have the Brexit cluster fuck to deal with. Now I’m concerned if I voice my views on social media about the handling by the conservative party I could have old posts dished out to bite me in a time and climate totally different to the one today and thus taken out’ve context.
The guilty now prove innocent later mentality that the internet has fostered truly disturbs me. Gunn apologised and deleted promptly, if that isn’t enough then what is? What else was he meant to do to keep his job that he worked hard for? Go back in time and tell himself not to tweet what he did in a climate vastly different to the one today, 10 years ago the first iPhone had just realised.
Im going to end this here by saying twitter has been one of the most amazing social media tools ever, the #metoo would’ve never of gained the traction it did without it. However I strongly urge anyone and everyone reading this post to go through all your social media accounts and delete anything that can be taken out context and used against you. I know I will be.
