I’ll be dead honest – ever since the election… I have been starting to understand and relate to this current iteration of Superman much more while I now view Cap as just… well… a movie character.
As a born minority, just seeing how vilified Superman was for not really trying to be evil (all just for being different, for him being an alien), and now see the same things being said to people like me. Yeah… now I want this Superman to come back and kick some ass.
I say this as a Batman-first sort of person that yeah, I am trying to be a good person and contribute yet why all this xenophobic hate? Just write it/edit it/direct it better WB, please :)
“I guess no one can stay good in this world”. People had issue with Superman saying that line in BvS, but I always found it to be sadly true for the same reasons you wrote about.
Marvel is making cinematic comfort food that doesn’t challenge the audience to think or consider a more complex style of storytelling.
Sure their model is making money but it’s going to eventually hurt the genre because it’s just repackaging the same story over and over again. Eventually, even the general audience movie goers, who have nothing really invested in these characters, are going to get tired of it.
For me, there’s not one MCU movie that I feel I need to watch more than MAYBE two times. It’s linear storytelling, combined with forced one liners and jokes to make it kid friendly, and it honestly is insulting to fans who know that there is more complexity to these characters and stories than what is being showcased.
I remain baffled how or why critics and the very minor vocal minority fanboy population still does not/cannot understand what the DCEU is trying to do with the genre. MOS and BvS specifically (SS not so much) have some of the most rich and complex storytelling I’ve seen to date in the genre. There are SO many layers to peel back and dissect. It’s exhausting to see articles like this on the web.
If DC Marvelizes their movies, count me out. That will be the beginning of the end of the genre. Mark my words.
When you are a fanboy, everything’s just fucking rainbows and sunshine when it comes to the things you fanboy about. No wonder you are that blind.
There he is…Mr. Ray of Fucking Sunshine himself…
Always.
”Marvel is making cinematic comfort food that doesn’t challenge the

No wonder SS is highly praised by the people. :p
I see people state that SS is better than BvS, or even MoS as a fact….. https://uploads.disquscdn.c…
SS set out to continue the trend of MOS and BvS. But the studio interfered bc they succumbed to popular and critical opinion. There’s no doubt that the final product was vastly different than the original concept. It’s my least favorite so far.
I’m pretty sure we all expected a much darker movie from the first trailer, and Joker was supposed to be in the last act and have more screen time, not like he’s supposed to be the main focus of a movie that is called “Suicide Squad”, but the trailers were full of lies. WB execs at it again….
Fun messy movie, but nothing special.
Compared to what Marvel had with their first 3 movies, DC’s start is a bit better, especially in terms of world building.
truth, the mcu is heavily watered down by disney, making childish versions of what could be great stories, not to mention they totally distorted the characters (but nobody complaints when marvels does it)
It’s too late man, did you see suicide squad?
No.
Well, I like Man of Steel better then every single marvel film to date so… Marvel isn’t making a better superman.
Superman does not live in New York City. If he says that he is not a reliable source.
Let’s compare an American patriot who fought a war to an Alien who barely learned about his origin and put the suit for one day to fight the next one….. Better Superman movies my ass.
Maybe if they let Superman as a character breath and grow up in the next movies, maybe then they can compare them as boy scouts.
But NO, let’s compare the entire MCU character arcs to 2 DCEU movies. Whoever wrote that article needs to sit the fuck down…. for real.
These people will never learn… and people will never NOT be negative assholes.
HAHAHA!!! Yeah… no.
No, actually
Wasn’t Cap BASICALLY anti-government and on the run, in the Civil War movie? LOL As for Evans’ Captain America v Cavill’s Superman; Chris Evans just gets to talk more, and show basic leadership qualities, while interacting with other people. Zack Snyder and Chris Terrio are the only two men to blame for Superman’s poor portrayal in BvS. They were given too much freedom with the script, and they failed miserably…it happens.
Ideally in the upcoming movies, I’d like Cavill’s Superman to be even more looser, inspirational, and charismatic, than Evans’ Captain America. https://uploads.disquscdn.c…
The article pretty much nails whats wrong with WB’s Superman. Too dark and mopey. The whole character is wildly off the mark. Which is a pity, because Cavill seems to have what it takes to bring us a Superman who inspires rather than bores. I keep hoping the next WB movie will get it right.
You apparently prefer spoon-fed story telling, relying on Donneresque characterization of Superman. How interesting is that really?
No I don;t. But I do like plots to make sense, for characters to have real motivations and for characters to skew closely to the elements that make them who they are. There’s plenty of tension to mine in a man with great power trying to do the right thing in an imperfect world. A virtuous man in impossible situations can be the basis of a compelling story.
The introduction of this version of Superman in MOS followed by the reaction of the world, Batman, and Wonder Woman in BvS, was necessary to progress the story they’re trying to tell. Have faith. There’s more than one way to get from point A to point B.
I guess I’m not into re-imagining such large elements of Superman, when you step that far away from what make Superman who he is it make me wonder what about Superman made you want to make a movie about him. I’ve seen every DC movie in the cinema, that won’t change. But I find it hard to get much up much hope for another MoS. Wonder Woman is looking great though.
Completely disagree, I believe man of steel made superman a relevant and interesting character. I had no previous interest in the character but this made him feel inspiring of sorts. The first flight scene was powerful, probably my favourite comic book movie moment ever. Can’t wait to see his transformation and journey continue in Justice League.
Marvel is a fucking joke.
lol what?
I think Marvel has both succeeded and failed at making “Superman” movies. When it comes to bringing idealistic characters into the modern times, then I’d agree that they’ve succeeded in that aspect. When it comes to bringing god-like alien characters into our world, I believe they too have actually failed since their only attempts at that have been the 2 Thor films and…. yeah. Marvel isn’t doing too good with their red caped gods either.
Also, while I think this article makes good points it again falls into the issue of saying that whats wrong with the DC films is the tone. TONE CAN’T MAKE OR A BREAK A MOVIE. Any film can work in any tone as long as the story calls for it. A dark and gloomy Superman can work great, it just needs to be supported.
Nope, you can take your BS analysis and put it back in the dumpster where you found it Hector (I’m assuming). As someone else put it, I like Man of Steel more than any MCU movie, that’s the damn truth.
People like the person who made this analysis just want Superman to be a little kids movie, simple, filled with jokes and not taking itself seriously at all. But if they don’t take themselves seriously how can I?
Does everything nerd related have to be kid friendly? And if so why? to appease parents, critics and Chinese censors?
Fuck No we need variety, kids have enough things made specifically for them already, don’t take Supes too
