Marvel Studios is bringing the “Master of Kung Fu” to the big screen! Deadline reports that Marvel has hired David Callaham (Wonder Woman 1984) to pen a script for Shang-Chi. Depending on the casting for The Eternals, Shang-Chi could be Marvel Studios’ first film with an Asian hero in the lead.
I get a TV show, but a movie franchise?! This character hasn’t been relevant in decades and you are expecting him to bring in the big crowds?
Kaingerc
Yeah, but comic book readers can provide a huge boost with marketing and getting the word out. Even the ‘Guardians of The Galaxy’ were involved in some pretty great events not long before their movie came out.
Shang-Chi hasn’t been completely absent but I don’t remember a single storyline in the past decade or more where he hasn’t been, at most, a glorified cameo. You will already have a tough sell with him basically being a ‘Bruce Lee’ type character with his original nemesis being Fu Manchu. (I am not even joking)
Thanasis
Oh god. This is so stupid. Cancelling Iron Fist was fine because that show was shit but to replace him with this noone is ridiculous.
Nahuel Benvenuto
lol what
Thanasis
Hit me up once you learn the difference between a relatively unkown character to the general public aka Iron Fist and an relatively unknown even amongst comic book readers.
cjflan32
Another diversity box checked off. Gerber must be hard right now.
Bob Burger
I wanted him for a Netflix series like a much, much better version than that crappy Iron Fist show with Lewis Tan in the lead.
But a movie? They’re gonna have to develop the crap out of this character and have the fight choreography on par with the best there is.
myzterius
Marvel is known for pulling it of.
Nahuel Benvenuto
lol yeah right troll
myzterius
Numbers dont lie and the audience came back for more, all of them were successful.
Thanasis
I don’t know, I feel like their origin story films tend to be kinda weak.
myzterius
Iron man was good, cap was good, thor was decent, goftg was good, ant man was good, black panther wasnt really an origin, but still good. I enjoyed most of them.
Thanasis
Iron man was great, Cap isn’t good it’s ok, Thor is also ok, Gotg is great, Antman is ok. Overall, more ok films than good ones imo. At least when it comes to their origin films. Iron Man 1 is till up there with the best though.
myzterius
Well thats good enough for me. Great and ok is a pretty good track record for me.
Thanasis
It’s good enough for me back then. I think that this just looks to much like what I’ve seen done before. At this point it’s too generic if that makes sense.
Knight-Errant
I’m intrigued, but think about my issue with the whole Danny Rand is white complaints from the Netflix series. I’m open to the idea of him not being Caucasian, but I think the character shouldn’t have been race bent to Asian. Isn’t it a stereotype to have “the Asian guy” a martial artist?
tylernorton
Every movie I’ve seen produced by china’s new movie studios have martial arts in them.
Knight-Errant
I’m all in on getting diversity in this genre; it’s always been about interesting characters, not “do they look like me.” Sometimes I wonder if people overlook stereotypes & quotas because it appears to be diversity.
tylernorton
Yeah, i get you but i figure if the chinese market pretty much exclusively makes movies featuring martial arts then showing chinese people doing martial arts probably isn’t that big of a deal.
Nahuel Benvenuto
Who?
tylernorton
1 billion dollars easy. Guaranteed. China alone will make this the next Black Panther.

Why did they draw an Italian man for an Asian role?!?!? So tired of this white wasrshin’ crap!
Papa Grande ( formerly deevo)
I guess they realized they’ve run out of white dudes named Chris.
