Marvel Studios is often (and weirdly) criticized for not killing any of its biggest characters after thirteen films in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. It’s as if Game of Thrones has somehow convinced a certain segment of the audience that there can be no consequences without death and the feeling that no one is safe. Many believed that Captain America: Civil War was the perfect time for Marvel to finally off a main Avenger (because they’re not counting Quicksilver in Avengers: Age of Ultron), but the filmmakers do not share that sentiment.

I now go into Marvel movies thinking “well, no one’s gonna die. Nothing to worry about.” There are little-to-no risks in my view. They’ll obviously beat the bad guy, and none of them will die (or stay dead, rather). I think Quicksilver was a sorry attempt to negate that. If no one dies in Infinity War, then what has Thanos accomplished? I think the lack of important deaths furthers the argument that Marvel’s villains are poorly made. I wouldn’t say that this particular complaint is abnormal/weird. Just my point of view; no deaths, no REAL stakes.
(I know BvS didn’t have any lasting deaths either, but that’s one movie. Marvel’s kept this up for years, is my point.) I’d love to hear anyone else’s thoughts.

I agree. Watching MCU films now feels like I’m stuck in a cycle of mid season episodes on a television series, worst yet it doesn’t even feel like they are building to a climax like a normal season does because they have to reset everything ready for the next film.
My only hope is the DCEU doesn’t get stuck in the same cycle of utter boringness. I actually hope they kill of a major character permanently in the JL films or someone that at least matters. Though in saying that DC villains will always be scarier even if they don’t, heck Batman was scarier in BvS then any MCU has been yet.
At this point though it could change I can’t even get myself hyped for Infinity Wars because I feel like Thanos is going to turn out to be a disappointment at most and at best a very average villain. -
I don’t think killing a character is necessary to create stakes. Captain America: The Winter Soldier had stakes, in my opinion, without killing off the main heroes. I’m sure someone will die in Infinity War. My problem with death is that characters either come back to life (ex. Coulson) or it’s sad to see if it’s a beloved/main character.
Remember, these films are also made with families in mind. Killing off Iron Man for example would lead to criticism versus Tony Stark retiring as a hero like Hank Pym.
I don’t mind a character dying but only if it’s done well. Don’t kill a character just to kill a character. Give meaning to their death. Celebrate the character’s life just as we celebrate someone’s life when they pass away. Plus, in all honesty, hoping for characters to die comes off as a little morbid when we, as real people, mourn the loss of loved ones. I’m just not into promoting death. Life happens, yes. But I’d rather not ask for someone to die. People will die in real life anyway. So the films can do that as well. I’m just not looking for death.
