We knew Jared Leto’s Morbius was in production, and we knew it would be released this summer, we just didn’t expect a teaser so soon. Alas, Sony on Monday released a teaser that gives fans a surprisingly thorough look at the gothic antihero.

The trailer essentially serves as an introduction to Leto’s Michael Morbius, a brilliant scientist who we learn is battling with a rare blood disease. In an effort to cure himself and others suffering his same fate, he undergoes experimental treatment and is forever changed.

“What first appears to be a radical success soon reveals itself to be a remedy potentially worse than the disease,” the trailer’s description reads.

While the trailer establishes the character of Dr. Morbius, it also goes to great lengths to point out that he lives in the same universe of Tom Holland’s Spider-Man. In addition to posters of Spider-Man – which are actually the Sam Raimi version –  we also get a glimpse of Vulture, who was the villain in Spider-Man: Homecoming.

The weird thing is Morbius doesn’t exist in the MCU, whereas Spider-Man does. However, the web-slinger is stuck in this weird middle where he can, at least for now, crossover into both. In any case, it likely won’t be long until Holland’s Spider-Man meets Morbius and, eventually, Tom Hardy’s Venom.

Morbius hits theaters on July 31, 2020.
