Marvel Studios has often been recognized for the visual effects in their movies, but not for costume design. The Academy and other awards-giving bodies don’t give much love to bringing comic book superheroes to the big screen, but they will not be able to ignore Black Panther in 2018. The film isn’t even out yet, but fans and pundits have been praising its costumes for months.
The Hollywood Reporter has a great profile on costume designer Ruth Carter (Amistad, Selma) and her work on the film. Carter and her team drew inspiration from broad range of locations to dream up “700 costumes fusing futurism, indigenous dress and high fashion.” The depth of their research and creativity certainly shows in the footage we have seen thus far.
