Since the weekend, there was a lot of dust kicked up on Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. By late Sunday night, the news began to hit the gossip sites and the trades alike. I reached out to several sources to find out exactly what was going on with Rogue One. When I asked a few crew members what was being reshot they laughed and said “everything.” Of course they were kidding but from the sound of it, the shooting will be extensive.
Here are the common themes in what people behind the scenes are saying:
I wasn’t really planning on seeing it anyway. The Force Awakens was terrible and I am sure the rest of the lineup will be as well. I really don’t want to see another Disneyfied Star Wars. Star Wars just isn’t the same without George Lucas. I know the prequels weren’t great, but at least they were more original than The Force Awakens.
Star Wars for me ended in 1983. There are only three Star Wars films in my opinion.

You are sure how exactly? I didn’t know time travel had been invented. You are in the minority if you thought Force Awakens was bad.

Respect, my friend. You are both wise and a good man.
Force Awakens was alright I guess…it was basically a copy and paste job from a New Hope and the 3rd act was a sloppy rush job.
Cisco007
It’s a carbon copy mashup of the original trilogy.

Was it Disney or Abrams? Star Trek done by Abrams was more marketable then all the original series & TNG movies. It did significantly better in theatres too.
Star Trek (2009) is Paramount Pictures, not Disney.
I only saw TFA once. I liked it initially, realized it was just rehashing A New Hope on a grander scale. Having said that, I don’t get into the “movie is going to suck/be amazing” business. If I could predict the future, I wouldn’t use it on something so trivial as the quality of movies.

Granted, I’ve only seen it once, but as I recall:
– The ball droid is carrying a map to Luke’s location – a character with Force abilities is found on a desert planet – that character finds the droid, which begins her adventure into a bigger “world” – that same character gets a lightsaber – an older, wiser character whose a mentor gets killed by a villain with Force abilities with a connection from the past – a hotshot, cocky pilot thought dead (instead of getting payment & departing) returns to help save the day – the Empire splinter group has a planet size (instead of moon size) battle station – instead of getting slighted by a metal, Chewie gets screwed out of a Leia hug
Not certain how those are generalized minutiae
Knight-Errant
But BB88 was the key to finding Luke. A droid with a specific purpose to locate someone.
We get introduced to a young new Force capable character, Rey, on a desert planet. Rey’s parents are a mystery to her, like Luke’s were to him.
“What a hunk of junk.” “That’s junk”
Correct; Luke was given a lightsaber in ANH; made his own in RotJ. Rey was given the lightsaber, as was Luke in TFA.
Han served as your Ben Kenobi in this one. He advised the stories were true, directly involved with the current status, & took Rey under his wing.
I’m aware, but both were thought gone (in some capacity) & fly in to save the day.
The SuperStar Planet, or whatever, was complete. The original Deathstar was breached by Rebels & had a similar design flaw.
It’s a dramatic shift in the story when Vader kills Kenobi in front of Luke. It was a dramatic shift in the story when Kylo kills Han in front of Rey.
You might find where Rey was found as generalized minutiae, but it’s no new creativity.

I’ve got to be completely honest, you are by far the only person I’ve read who think TFA is more RotJ. That doesn’t mean you shouldn’t stand your ground, but I’ve not heard anyone echo that.
Besides my own assessment, I’ve spoken with others & read reviewers with the exact same assessment. That doesn’t mean I rest on them to validate my point.
You talk about “generalized minutiae” then use the ground (which had a very select few) & space battle in TFA is closer to RotJ. The Rancor seen been closer to the cargo carried in TFA.
Ultimately, the themes were closer to ANH. I’m not breaking down scene by scene to prove/disprove it being a carbon copy.

You’ve lost me here; the die-hard Star Wars fans I know & writers don’t analyze the movie the way you do? Hmm, interesting.
I actually didn’t reference YouTube at all. I mentioned reading, not viewing.
I guess with even Abrams acknowledging the similarities, he’s been looking at the films without your lense of view.
But I admire the hill on which you stand your ground.
Knight-Errant
I’ll have to check my post again, but I believe I described my friends as “die-hard fans” not “fanboys”. Fanboys don’t uses logic, & I wouldn’t surround myself with people who wouldn’t use critical thinking.
I don’t agree Kylo/Han is Vader/Luke. Just as I don’t believe Rey is Like’s daughter. It’s too 1 dimensional.
Much like when people believe Batman killed Joker in Killing Joke because Morrison said so, I prefer to add weight to what the narrative is based on what the creator actually states.
But, as I said, stand on that hill. Don’t standing against the grain gets more notoriety then being one of many.

There is no way this is coming out this year, and it shouldn’t.
40% is getting re shot, and that means 40% re edits and 40% re effects work. Not to mention the score and sound work.
Cisco007
Sounds like they are having big issues with this film actually. About half of the film is being reshot?? WTF? Probably trying to make it more “fun” so the hypocritics will overlook the problems and issues with the film just like they swept it under the rug with the Force Awakens. What a joke. This film seemed force fed….no pun intended from the beginning anyway by Disney.
Cisco007
Rogue One sounds like a complete mess. They better change the release date and push it back or Ugh
Milo Yiannopoulos
This is the biggest reshoot issue I’ve ever heard of. Never heard of “half” or “everything” being thrown around a big blockbuster concerning reshooting.
The good news for you SW fans is that they realized stuff needed to be fixed and they’re working on it.
