“‘I am Iron Man.’ You think you’re the only superhero in the world? Mr. Stark, you’ve become part of a bigger universe. You just don’t know it yet.”

It has been ten years since we first heard Samuel L. Jackson deliver that line during Nick Fury’s iconic MCU debut in the post-credits scene from Iron Man. Since then, Nick Fury has almost always been at least one step ahead of the characters on screen, and those of us watching the stories unfold.

There was a time, however, when even Nick Fury did not know he was part of a bigger universe. The only superheroes in the world were presumed dead (Captain America) or just a tall tale (Ant-Man). This is how we meet Fury in the 1990s-set Captain Marvel. He’s a desk jockey, not a director. His cynicism and trust issues haven’t set in yet and are instead replaced by a sense of humor and a second eye.
