Spider-Man: Homecoming has earned $330,361,861 domestically, which is good enough for the film to pass Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, which made a total of $330,360,194 during its 2016 run at the domestic box office, according to Box Office Mojo.
Spider-man has no where near the recognition of Batman and Superman yet still managed to make a good amount of money for a Spider-Man movie. How can 2 of the most iconic superheroes, Batman and Superman, not easily make a billion?
I think part of TDK’s success was from the publicity of Ledger’s death. TDKR got to ride the coat tails of that.
I still think that trilogy is the best cinematic version of Batman, but I can’t be objective about its success & not factor that in.

I don’t know if Parker isn’t as popular as Batman & Kent. Arguably, there are 4 characters in a class of their own on a global scale. Those three & Diana.
And he never will. Sad how far these dceu bots go to defend their sinking ship. Even snyder jumped off the train knowing very well how shit the entire universe is.
Objectively, that’s kind of weighted. The first 3 of the 4 DCEU movies feature 3 of the 4 most popular superheroes. The MCU had B-level (at best) characters. Hulk was probably the best known of the group, and that had the shadow of the Ang Lee movie covering it.
If the DCEU’s first group of money didn’t make money, that’d be the actual surprise. It’s like being surprised that an MLB team outperformed a Double-A team.
I guess the talk of the first group of DCEU movies will continue. Not necessarily in a positive light, as the disliked issues seem to anchor the talk.
Though, Avengers & Iron Man get a lot of talk still. Hell, Iron Man is noted as what brought RDJ back to the forefront of Hollywood.
Truthfully now, besides hardcore fans, whose “dissecting” the DCEU movies? Do you think the general audience what to watch movies to dissect it or just to be entertained?
I think the “bad reviews” is just an excuse. Similar to when a WB executive stated GL didn’t do well because people were getting tired of comic book movies. How many people do you know didn’t see the movie because someone who gets paid or has a blog said it wasn’t good? I’ve yet to meet anyone who decides whether to see or not see a movie because of a critic’s review. The same with what movies have been nominated and/or won awards.
At this point, I’m more impressed when the MCU can take characters like Ant-Man & GotG and make revenue off them. And if Avengers: IW doesn’t at least match the first one, should the studio or diehard Marvel fans really be cheering?

I think word of mouth means more the Rotten Tomatoes. I think the value of RT & critics is a false narrative. How many movies got railed by critics & on RT, but did well in theaters? What about the reverse?
How many people do you know who put more weight in critics & RT over their interests & word of mouth?
I recall having only Netflix interest in GotG. I wound up seeing it in the theater because a coworker of my wife told her it’s good. She had no idea what critics or RT said about it.
Sidebar: I wish I could’ve waited for Netflix to watch both GotG movies.

When we were in 7th grade, word of mouth, to the chagrin of Nick French, sure got the word out about him shitting himself during 1st period. Then again, the world has changed in the last 25 years ago!
As a Spider-man since the early 80s, you can trust me when I say Homecoming is a Netflix watch. Raimi’s Spider-man is better.
I wouldn’t say any movie in this genre is bold anymore. Avengers might have been, but monster movie franchises had crossovers decades ago.
I’ve streamlined my theater experiences to watch my wife wants to see; basically the MCU & Wonder Woman. Date night ends better when she picks the movie (and she knows I’m not interested in pay ticket prices for basically anything else). Beyond that, any home media I watch is limited to what I have an interest in.

How many billion dollar movies does dceu have and how many does mcu have? Dceu has been around since what 2013?
The MCU showed they could take D-level characters & make something out of them. I’m curious what happens when the DCEU gets going & tries the same. Possibly Aquaman will be some sort of indicator, though he’s more a B/C-level character.
I think some of GotG helped Suicide Squad. I remember watching the trailers & thinking they should separate itself from GotG with its marketing style. Also, the marketing really used a lot of the Joker (arguably the 5th most popular comic book character). I’ve been told (it hasn’t gotten to the top of my Netflix queue yet) Joker is hardly in the theatrical cut.
I do think the studio made a strategic moved by casting Batman & Deadshot with top tier A-list actors.

Objectively, who was in those 2 DCEU movies? Three of four most popular superhero characters should outperform B/C-level characters.
I think 2008 was the game changing year. It not only set off what will become the MCU, but showed a comic book movie (TDK) can be hugely profitable.
I think Returns suffered from no Superman movie in 20 years (last 2 leaving bad tastes in our mouths) & Begins suffered from something labeled “a Batman movie” (bad taste is underselling it).
I’d say to the general audiences, Stark & Cap were B-level at best. Hell, I’ve been reading comic books since ’84 and there was a lot I didn’t know about them. I think Stark has gained his increased status merely because of RDJ.
It’s sexist, but Diana is grouped with Batman, Kent, & Parker because she’s a female. Cap edged her out debut wise, but she’s been a more iconic character for decades.
I’m not convinced WW would be getting the box office juice it has if it wasn’t her first solo movie. It’s as cookie-cut as the other movies in the genre.
I think Homecoming is getting its legs from the MCU connection & longtime fans convincing themselves it’s “the best interpretation” of the source material. I saw Raimi’s first one 10 times in the theater. This one I was good after the first viewing.
Dc had like a twenty year head start since 1979, and they filled it with bat nipples, cat woman, steel, Jonah hex, green lantern etc and stumbled over themselves out of the gate and passed out. Marvel formed their studio twenty years later hopped over the body and galloped to a win. They crossed the finish line and did 3 more laps before dc has even crossed that billion dollar finish line. Don’t hate. Congratulate.
You know marvel had zero control over those movies, right? Those weren’t done by Disney/marvel, they were done by other studios. Wb/Dc has no one to blame but themselves for their stinkers, and by the same token Mcu can’t take credit for Raimi Spiderman and Blade. I thought everyone knew that.

Not sure the Nick Fury & Doctor Strange TV movies count here. I can’t recall if the Captain America (or Dolph/Punisher) had theatrical releases. You could throw in, however, Howard the Duck, Daredevil, Elektra, & Blade movies.

Wooooooooo!!!!!!!!! One mediocre film surpasses an even shitter mediocre film in an area that doesn’t measure two shits about the quality of the film. Great time to be a movie fan.
In 10 years and beyond I’ll still be watching and enjoying BvS. I cannot tell you the next time I’ll watch Spiderman Homecoming cause it’s bland, unoriginal and forgettable.
