Watch the new trailer for Star Wars: The Last Jedi and see it in theaters December 15.
I’ll assume this movie to be great. I’ll also assume, judging by how Abrams nearly rehashed A New Hope for the TFA, that the final movie will end with an awkward dance by short cuddly aliens.
This looks great! It looks like the sequel series will finally come into it’s own (I hope) thanks to this entry.
Clearly the throne room scene rumor is true. But now we know Ben and Rey are family that are balancing the force between Luke and Snoke and the reason why Rey was sent away before Ben was kidnapped. Knowing Snoke’s power and what he’s after, his intentions are clear but whether or not he succeeds is all on Rey.
I was honestly bored and have zero interest in watching the movie after this trailer.
Maybe I would care if Rey wasn’t such a massive goddamn Mary Sue, but the fact that she is? Why is she even training in the first place? She’s clearly strong enough to overpower all the Jedi that have ever existed combined. No need. So in other words, this entire story arc feels hollow and YET another repeat of Ep 5 (with Luke training, because he actually NEEDED to). I’m so turned off by all of this, it actually pisses me off just how much they have fucked up TFA and Rogue One. No reason to suppose this one will be any different.
My God… I freaking HATED R1. It’s a film I damn near count as unwatchable. TFA isn’t a “badly” made film. It has good effects. Good production design. Good editing. Good pacing. Good acting. Etc. But it failed horrendously in terms of character and story. Rey is an OP Mary Sue the likes of which we’ve never seen before. Jyn (or whatever her name was) isn’t like that. But she’s an incredibly boring and hollow character nonetheless, and that’s true for all of the characters in R1. They are all boring, one-dimensional, flat characters that nobody gives a shit about, starring in a film with laughable effects. Mediocre production. BAD editing and horrible pacing. And the story basically makes no sense either. It’s a bad film from start to finish.
Still, while I consider R1 a “worse” film than TFA, at least it didn’t insult my intelligence every 2 minutes like TFA did. R1 doesn’t anger me, so much as it disappointed me (because at the end of the day, I do really WANT to enjoy these films). But I guess it just wasn’t for me. Shit happens, I can’t like everything and that’s fine. But TFA? That movie just pisses me off… As I’ve said, it’s a well “made” film, but the story and characters enraged me. Rey is just a massive middle-finger to anyone with half a brain. I just cannot stand her. And Daisy Ridley’s ridiculous eyebrow overacting doesn’t help either. She is 50% of the reason I don’t give a shit about the sequel trilogy. I watched TFA in theaters. After that garbage, I was hessitent with R1 and didn’t see it (I was going to at the very end, but they weren’t playing it anymore). After watching R1 at home, I’m glad I didn’t waste my money on it in theaters, and now I won’t ever see ANY of the new Star Wars films ever again in theaters, with MAYBE the exception of the Obi-Wan film (because I’ve wanted an Obi film for as long as I can remember). I don’t give a shit about Ep 8. And with Jar Jar Abramns diricting Ep 9, I care even less about that film. I don’t care about the Han Solo movie (never have, even if I loved TFA and R1). I don’t care about the Boba Fett film. I just don’t care about any of it.
Yes, I love them. That’s why I hate the sequels (because they shit on EVERYTHING the previous movies have accomplished, narratively speaking). I mean, the prequels aren’t exactly “good” films (I still love Ep 3 though), but they had memorable characters. Mace Windu, Palpatine, Obi, Anakin, Yoda, Dooku, Maul, Grievous, Padme, etc etc. Whether or not you like the characters or the actors, you DO remember their names. Can you honestly name me one character from R1? I can’t. I don’t know ANY of their names. And I reckon 99% of the audience don’t either. Because they are horribly developed characters with zero depth. Jyn is the only name I remember, and that’s not to say she’s a well written character, because she isn’t. She’s hollow, and has no personality.
What I want from a Star Wars film, is a film which actually RESPECTS the Original trilogy, and doesn’t just vomit all over what those films have achieved. TFA doesn’t explain ANYTHING concerning the First Order. Because they can’t. There’s no logical reason for it to exist. The Empire was destroyed, yet TFA makes it seem as though nothing of any significance was ever accomplished in Ep 6. It honestly diminishes the entire story of the OT. Then we see what happened to Luke, Leia or Han… And instead of logically progressing their characters, they’ve basically opted to keep them completely the same, or hit the reset button and let the start over (again, destroying any and all character development they had in the OT). Why the fuck is Leia not a Jedi? Why is Luke such a damn coward? Why is Han back to his old ways? Where’s the progression? Where’s the character development? And they justify all of this in probably one of the worst exposition scenes I’ve ever seen in a movie like this (I’m referring to Leia’s and Han’s conversation at the “Resistance” base in TFA).
What I also want from the new characters, is LOGIC and REASON. I quite like Finn’s personality, but his “arc” reeks of hypocrisy and stupidity. He won’t take lives for no reason on behalf of the first order (fine), so what does he do? He escapes and shoots the very soldiers he trained his life to protect, for his own sake. If that’s not hypocritical I don’t know what is. Also, what’s up with the cheesy as fuck character interactions? Rey, Finn and Poe have barely known each other for 2 seconds and they’re already talking like they’ve known each other for decades. It reminds me of kids movies. Also, why is Poe in this film? He acts as a plot device to get Finn out, that’s it.
And Rey? The less said about her, the better. She’s the physical embodiment of everything that’s wrong with Kathleen Kennedy’s horrible approach.
I also want the new movies to take RISKS and be ORIGINAL. And not repeat the same story beats from the OT, because JJ and co are too lazy and frightened to do otherwise. Another Deathstar, are you fucking kidding me? Yet another “secret message” hidden in a droid? Another desert planet? The “old wise guy” dies again? This list does not end. I just can’t believe KK separated the EU timeline (which is WAY better and more original than anything we saw from TFA) for this cheaply recycled retro-trash.
Say what you want about the prequels, but they had original and new stories to tell. They had a reason to exist. They ADDED to the universe, and didn’t take away from it (unlike the Sequel Trilogy). The new movies are corporate, lifeless retreads of what came before.
As far as I’m aware, Rian has only made Looper. And I actually think Looper is one of the most overrated films of all time. It’s a good film, but nowhere near as good as people say. In terms of writing, a quick analysis of that film basically destroys it. The time-travelling makes zero sense in that film, and I blame the writing, so Rian’s responsible. I mean, there are movie breaking plotholes in Looper, so if that’s the extent of Rian’s writing “talent”, I’m afraid Ep 8 isn’t going to fair much better. And I don’t care if he’s a fan. JJ “was a massive fan” and look how that turned out? It turned out into a lifeless carbon copy with zero wit or balls.
Also, what makes you think that this is going to be Rian’s movie? TFA, R1 and Han Solo are CLEARLY Studio movies “directed” by Kathleen Kennedy. She implodes at the mere thought of innovative storytelling or wit. That’s why she fired Phill Lord and Chris Miller. Because they actually wanted to do something NEW and fresh. She has proved time and time again she despises Lucas’ original approach and has done everything she can to keep the movies as safe and mundane as possible.
“I never like to quantify a movie’s quality by the box office numbers, but it’s not like it was hated in general.”
No it wasn’t “hated”… but then again, neither was The Phantom Menace in 1999, and it also made a billion dollars.
I wasn’t even born yet. But the first SW I watched is Ep 6, and I loved it (which is why it’s still my favorite of the OT).
No, it’s a fact. It’s a proven fact.
Projection. I can provide valid arguments to prove she is. You on the other hand, simply resort to “THA FORCE” as the ultimate cop-out counter-argument. That’s how I know you are the one blinded by fanboyism. I honestly see no difference between you defending Rey and saying she’s not a Mary Sue, and DCEU fanboys saying JL and BvS have great CGI, or “intelligent” stories, or any other widespread criticism these movies have faced.
Rey does a force pull on her first try beating Kylo’s grip. Luke took 3 years to do a similar feat. If you think that’s in any way acceptable, you’re blind.
Because Luke is the son of Anakin. And Anakin is according to the lore, the single most powerful Force user that’s ever and will ever exist. And Luke is said to be “close” in terms of power and potential to his father. So that is WHY “Rey is only allowed to be ‘as’ strong as Luke”. Look, I’m okay with her possibly doing a couple of things better. I don’t care. But the difference has to be believable. What Rey did far transcends the boundaries of suspension of disbelief. If we take her feats seriously, she is clearly more powerful than Anakin EVER was. Which is canonically speaking, impossible. It shouldn’t be possible. Especially for a character like Rey, who has zero prior experience. That’s why I am so fucking bothered with the IMMENSE difference in power between Rey and Luke. Is she was “as” powerful, or slightly less / more? It’d be completely fine with that. But holding her own against an apprentice with DECADES worth of experience in LS combat defies all “force” explanation. That’s simply NOT how it works. These skills don’t come from the Force, and using her petty “staff” skills isn’t any better.
“Luke’s personality and impatience is demonstrated to cloud his mind and hold him back in those movies.”
You’re vastly overestimating Luke’s impatience. Not to mention, Rey clearly isn’t that “levelheaded” herself. She spends the entire movie trying to figure out who she is. She’s a lost character. Don’t try to downplay her inconsistencies.
“you want to label her a Mary Sue because she does something differently than him?”
No, because she does things that defy explanation or logic. No Jedi has EVER shown to be as formidable and as quick in learning the ways of the Force as Rey, both in canon and in the EU. Why does that not bother you?
“He did this the first time he ever flew an X-Wing. Why? The force…”
It wasn’t the first time he flew either. He was said to be a very prominent pilot before the events of Ep 4. Did Rey ever hold a LS before? No. And that’s the difference. Also, Luke won that battle purely as a result of his SKILLS… NOT the Force. He only uses the Force at the very end when he makes the shot. Everything he does before that does NOT stem from the Force. And he also didn’t do it alone. Both the Rebels backed him up AND Obi guided him. Who guided Rey? That’s right, she doesn’t need guiding because she can do everything herself.
Your comparison to Luke destroying the Death Star is silly. It’s established through dialogue that Luke is an excellent pilot, close to his father (“The best starpilot in the galaxy”), and a great shot. Him and Biggs trained their skills on Tatooine. Using the Force to guide the missile into the Death Star is his first step towards mastery of the Force.
What Rey did is equivalent to Luke picking up Obi-Wan’s lighsaber after his death and kicking Darth Vader’s ass like it’s nothing. That would be terrible writing and destroy any resemblance of character development or a hero’s journey. He would already be perfect and the villains would be effectively castrated from posing any threat. Why would we feel any danger when they fight again in TESB? If that had happened, Vader would have never become an icon of evil, just as Kylo is seen as an angsty pussy. It’s not about sexism. Luke would be a Gary Stu all the same.
No, I’m right and you’re wrong. Luke could barely Force pull his lightsaber in the second film, while Rey does it with no effort with zero prior experience, training or simple knowledge of the Force. How did she even know to extend her hand and expect the object to fly back at her? Kylo has presumably been trained for years, first by Luke, and later by Snoke.
Having unexplained powers that exceed everyone else and no flaws is the definition of Mary Sue/Gary Stu. Luke and even Anakin (the Chosen One, which adds to the ridiculousness of Rey being better than even him) didn’t fight the big bad in their first films, because they had to have character development first, then got their asses kicked in the second film, and only became fully trained Jedi in the third and then finally were powerful enough to defeate the bad guy. That’s called a character arc. Rey is not relatable because she’s perfectly capable to magically overcome any obstacle she faces from the get go. Any criticism, which there has been a lot, is immediately, and ridiculously, brushed off as “sexism”, like you did.
THANK YOU.
Ep 8 and 9 can do NOTHING to change how ridiculously OP Rey was in Ep 7. People say “they might reveal she was trained prior to the events of Ep 7 in later films”. That argument is worthless because according to the official lore, Rey was dropped on Jaku at the age of 5. There’s NO way she could have received meaningful training at that age. Maybe she learned some basic Jedi tricks, but I hardly think she could have learned advanced lightsaber combat at such a young age that she could have defeated a Sith apprentice like Kylo with DECADES worth of experience and training.
“Was shot by a weapon which its power was very much made obvious to the audience.”
Which did not stop him from outrunning both Rey and Finn. Also the fact that it was shown to be “very strong”, proves that Kylo wasn’t shot directly, instead it clearly only hit him sideways. Because as you’ve said, that gun would’ve cut Kylo clean in half if he had been hit directly. If anything, it’s just inconsistent and bad writing, at best.
“Struggling with the light and the dark side of the force.”
He destroyed the light side by killing his father. That was the point.
“Struggles to defend himself against a girl who has defended herself for years.”
LOL. “defended herself for years” is NOTHING compared to what Kylo has trained for.
“Who was developing force-like abilities possibly due to yet unexplained heritage.”
At 5 years old? Give me a break.
Rey is not appealing, no matter how many like-minded yokels have bounced that back at you…
You’re too far up your own ass to argue with, sweetie. Truly a legend in your mind, but unfortunately not in anyone else’s.
What the fuck. This is just the most childish and pathetic of responses. I don’t like Rey so that must mean I’m a “self proclaimed” ALPHA male and I hate seeing women in lead roles. Fuck that line of worthless and garbage reasoning. It has absolutely NOTHING to do with her being female. It has everything to do with her being overpowered to obscene levels. Maybe you’d have a point that “sexist men” like me wouldn’t care if Rey was male, if you could actually point to a SINGLE male character who’s *as* strong, and *as* capable, and *as* inexplicably victorious as Rey. Good luck finding such a male character, because “he” doesn’t exist.
If it was only about her being female, where the fuck, are all of these worthless misogynistic pigs when it comes to Jyn? I didn’t see any criticism saying she was a Mary Sue. Or what about Wonder Woman? Surely she must have faced immense backlash from lowlife basement dipshits who can’t handle the sight of a “string womin”, right? Oh wait, no one cared. Stop pushing this narrative of sexist hysteria, when there is none.
“A lot of fans”? I haven’t seen any. You’re making shit up. And I didn’t say it wasn’t a point of discussion with Rey, but I am saying people like YOU are the reason it exists in the first place. You simply cannot handle honest and correct criticism towards Rey being a massive, overpowered Mary Sue, so you resort to the ultimate, cowardly scapegoat argument and say anyone who dares say Rey’s writing is bullshit, simple “must be” a woman-hating sexist patriarchal shitlord. I guess that’s why my sister thought the same thing about Rey as I did, right? I guess she must hate herself as well.
“Her being overpowered is probably the biggest problem, I don’t disagree there.”
Then what the fuck is up with your shallow cheap shots of “sexism”, when you fully admit the criticism is valid?
No, you said “Her being overpowered is probably the biggest problem, I don’t disagree there”. That’s not the same as saying you agree with the assertion that the criticism she faced of being overpowered exists. Don’t blame me for your inability to make your point clear.
It is made up. I haven’t seen a single comment concerning WW that criticizes the fact that WW is female, and in turn “op” or “a Mary Sue”. I just didn’t happen. Realistically speaking, sure maybe one dumbass said such a thing, but it was completely insignificant next to the overwhelmingly positive response the movie and trailers have gotten.
“Luke was overpowered in IV. Nobody batted an eye.”
I don’t have any problem with main characters being “more powerful” than side-characters. But Luke was not overpowered to the same extent as Rey. Did Luke master the Force in Ep 4? No. Did he engage in LS combat? No. Did he WIN in LS combat? No. Did he master more advanced Force abilities like the mind trick in 2 fucking seconds? No. Did he beat THE MAIN BAD GUY in his first film? No. Did he constantly save himself and never needed anyone else? No. Did he outsmart the owner of the Falcon in mechanical insight? No.
Rey does ALL of these things, with ZERO explanation.
Luke was good at one thing and one thing only: and that was flying. Which, UNLIKE REY, was actually explained in the film. Not only did they clearly state his father to be the best starfighter in the galaxy, Luke also was extremely prominent at flying and shooting woomp rats with great accuracy prior to the events of Ep 4.
Luke had the entire Rebel Force backing him up and only truly used the Force twice. The first time is with Obi-Wan in the Falcon, which isn’t impressive, as that was basic Padawan training. The second time was impressive, obviously at the end when he makes the shot using the Force. That’s still only ONE exception compared to Rey’s continuous magical and bullshit feats.
Rey is a scalvager. It makes sense for her to have some mechanical intelligence, I’m fine with that. It’s still bullshit that she outsmarts Han freaking Solo, but whatever. I can accept that. Apparently, she’s also a great fucking pilot. No real explanation given as to how she’s such a fantastic pilot, but they “somewhat” imply she has flying experience (and I’m being generous here), so again. I’m sort of fine with that. But there is just NO fucking way she could ever hope to use to Force as she did. Jedi Mind tricks? Force grips? Lightsaber combat? She didn’t even know the Force existed ffs. Rey is around 18 years old. Kylo is almost 30. Rey was dropped on Jakku at the age of 5. Even IF she had Force training before that, it couldn’t have been particularly significant at such a young age. But let’s assume she started training at 1 days old. Because that’s apparently believable according to blind fanboys such as yourself. That’ FIVE years worth of training. Now apply the same to Kylo. But let’s say that he started at 5 years old. Because that’s more reasonable. That’s still almost 25 YEARS worth of training. And you’re saying it’s in any way remotely believable that Rey beat Kylo both in force and combat skill, just because “she has used a staff”? What the fuck…
Maybe you’d have a point if Luke mastered the Force in 2 seconds, just like Rey. Maybe you’d have a point if Luke obliterated Vader in Ep 4 with ZERO prior experience. Maybe you’d have a point if Luke showed to be ten times stronger than Obi-Wan in Ep 4. Except… NONE of those things happened.
“Your insecurities are showing now.”
What “insecurities” be that? I’ve said before that Jyn didn’t bother me. WW didn’t bother me. Ripley doesn’t bother me. Sarah Connor doesn’t bother me. Furiosa doesn’t bother me. That proves I’m not “insecure about anything”.
“That’s right, we don’t know yet because it’s only the first movie.”
Already explained why that’s not a valid argument.
“I’m just gonna call you a sexist pig to get a rise out of your dumbass.”
LOL. If that doesn’t prove I actually got a rise out of YOU, Idk what does. Seems you can’t handle the fact. You lost. Get over it.
Because everyone lives in the same country, right?
“I’m just shocked that you think you can define these Characters by one movie.”
It’s not what “I” think. I’m just following what the MOVIES have given us and making every logical and possible assumption based on that. As I have said, suppose Rey had a “secret” history with training in the ways of the Force… it couldn’t POSSIBLY have been enough, as she was was FIVE years old when dropped on Jakku. That’s a maximum of FIVE years of training (which still is too much, because no one traines from birth. It’s more likely 1 or 2 years, and even THAT is stretching it). In other words, her history – be it filled with Force learning or not – ultimately does NOT MATTER. Because she couldn’t possibly have learned LS combat or advanced Force skills at such a young age. It’s bullshit. And she couldn’t possibly have defeated Kylo Ren who has literally more than 2 DECADES worth of experience.
You see? I am using YOUR arguments. YOUR assumptions. I’m being generous as to how extensive her skills may be. And yet, STILL it’s not enough to justify her prowess. Why is that so hard to understand? Ffs, man.
So when you say “Tells me you’re not a very patient person. If you were, you’d see the logic in waiting for the next two films THEN start forming opinions.”
That actually proves YOU don’t have the patience to read my comments THOROUGHLY. Because if you did, you would understand why “waiting for the next films” will do NOTHING to change my argument.
“I srsly don’t believe that you legitimately think Rey is overpowered. It’s just an excuse for you to hate on her character.”
It’s the opposite. I “hate” her because she’s OP.
I actually don’t think she will beat Kylo in Ep 8. That would literally be too much. But yeah, this reply is far more reasonable than “if you don’t agree, you’re Satan”.
Luke was overpowered in ANH? Not by a long shot. Rey succeeded in everything she did in TFA, all without prior experince, training or knowledge. There is nothing but a vague reference to the Force “awakening” inside of her, but we’re yet to learn why and what that even means.
It’s called decaf, look into it:)
Rey isn’t a strong person jus been living alone for years?!
A little whiny aren’t we!!
Whoa. That guy is gonna kill BOTH his parents? Bummer.
