But he’s still concerned about the industry’s future and the current Hollywood business model that worships comic-book movies. “There will be a time when the superhero movie goes the way of the Western,” Spielberg told the Associated Press, while promoting his fall movie, Bridge of Spies. “Right now the superhero movie is alive and thriving. I’m only saying that these cycles have a finite time in popular culture. There will come a day when the mythological stories are supplanted by some other genre that possibly some young filmmaker is just thinking about discovering for all of us.”

Every genre has its decline at some point. The thing is that westerns, a presumed dead genre for the last 2 decades, has been revitalized in the 2010’s. Even if the audience starts to feel comic-book fatigue at some point, the decline will be a decade long tops.

well, i’m not sure; superhero genre is like any other genre: make too much of it and it starts getting boring… take action movies for example, does anybody remember franchises like lethal weapon and those jerry bruckheimer movies (the rock, con- air, armaggedon) or those from john woo, like face- off or broken arrow and roland emmerich’s ID4 and the likes? those were great back in the day but there were too much of them that it started getting ridiculous and the genre ended up fading; there’s no more of ’em now; superhero movies may go down the same way, but i think the trick to prevent that from happening is freshening things up from time to time, break some moulds here and there and bring something new to the table to avoid repetition.

So basically you completely agree with him and you just don’t know it. He never said Westerns are completely gone now, he just said that the comic book genre will “go the same way” as Westerns. Basically saying that they’ll still be made every now and then, but just not be the huge boom they are now, you know, like Westerns. And honestly he’s right, there will be a day, way in the future, where superhero movies will only be made every now and then. No one thinks that they will be completely non existent.

I think the “superhero fatigue” debate, should DIE like Western films have. And what a weird comparison to make, anyway. Western films are VERY limited in the overall look of them, and the types of stories you can tell. With enough creativity, you can do ANYTHING with a comic book movie. A Batman movie can be a crime/action/drama. Or you can do a Comedy/Sci-fi/Action flick like Guardians of the Galaxy.
The interest for comic book and Star Wars movies, isn’t going anywhere.
