In my opinion, BvS wasn’t “a mess.” I think it was just far too complex for the genre. I loved the movie, but definitely see why some would consider it messy.

This here is a great, well thought-out analysis, if anyone is interested in diving into BvS on a much more analytical note:

Right up front: I have a clear pro-DC bias. I loved the first two Christopher Reeve Superman movies. I loved the two Tim Burton Batman movies. I loved “Superman Returns.” I loved the “Dark Knight Trilogy.” I honestly think “Man of Steel” and “Batman v Superman” are the two best super-hero movies ever made.

    But wow. Just wow.

“Suicide Squad” is a terrible, terrible, incompetently made movie. I’m talking “Superman IV,” “Batman and Robin,” “Masters of the Universe,” “Ghostbusters II,” and “Jaws: The Revenge” level bad. Truly awful. I couldn’t even tell you the plot, that’s how incomprehensible it is. It’s like it was written and directed by a 13-year-old who wrote down a list of all the “cool” things he liked and that list was the script of the film. It looks cheap, its visually ugly, and it literally–LITERALLY, in the actual sense of the word–doesn’t make sense. It’s the equivalent of fan film.

Under different circumstances I would actually encourage people to see the film for yourself just to experience this unprecedented level of incompetence first hand, but every dollar this dreck makes will only encourage WB to make more movies like this.

People can legitimately debate the aesthetics and narrative and thematic choices made in “Man of Steel” and “BvS,” but those films were still well crafted, professionally made movies. Whether or not one liked the stories or the design of those films, they still made sense, there was still a logic and a coherence to the choices the filmmakers made. “Suicide Squad,” on the other hand, literally doesn’t even make coherent sense.

Scenes start in the daytime, cut to nighttime, and then cut back to daytime with no explanation at all. The equivalent of a nuclear level threat is occurring over the skies of the DCEU version of Chicago and there is ZERO military or police presence anywhere other than the dozen or so soldiers assigned to babysit Task Force X. Imagine the last 20 minutes of the original “Ghostbusters” (the villains are basically the same as Zuul) but instead of being armed with portable nuclear weapons to neutralize the threat, people are armed with a machine gun, a pistol, and a boomerang. It’s asinine.

People complain about how Wonder Woman didn’t serve a purpose to the plot of “BvS” (she does: she’s validation of Lex Luthor’s meta-human hypothesis being more than just Superman), but the Joker is completely inconsequential to the “story” of “Suicide Squad.” You could cut every single one of his scenes out of the movie and it would have no effect.

And don’t fool yourself (based on the recent “Hollywood Reporter” story) into thinking that the original director’s cut of this film would be better. The basic plot of this film is flawed at its core. No amount of editing could save this. Easter eggs and fanboy moments are not a story. The film has to stand on its own regardless of the source material.

Again: I LOVE the DC movies. I will (and have) vigorously argued the legitimate artistic merits of “BvS.” But “Suicide Squad” is a level of awful that I haven’t seen in almost 20 years.

    Warner Bros. should be embarrassed.

I think the future movies have time to be filmed in a more “pleasing” way. To me it looked liked SS was filmed to be a darker film that matched BvS tone and was cut to be lighter, so I didn’t like how it was cut. Also, I didn’t like is that it was too short, I wanted to see more of each of those characters, I wanted to see more of how Harley and Joker became the King and Queen of Gotham, that alone would be such an awesome story. I think the movie worked great to be their first mission, I think it was a story that validated Waller’s task force x. I think any other larger villain would have started competing with JL material.
I understand what you guys say about deconstructing a movie, but I also think critics are bias because the superhero movies that they are used to are fun for all ages, and DCU isn’t, in another comment I mention how my 3-year old enjoyed MCU movies, but I won’t let him watch BvS and won’t let him watch SS, and he caught me I was watching MoS and he was terrified of Zod, so I had to turn it off. I know how this could disappoint at lot of people that are dying to introduce their kids to what we have loved since we were kids and we can’t. I personally thought BvS was a masterpiece, specially the Ultimate Cut, might be cos I just finished reading a psychology book which talked about words and physical behavior, but at the end I was pump to see more DCU, but sad that my son was not going to be able to watch it for a while.
I hope DC makes enough money to continue and I hope the future movies have a better set up for the general audience, I hope WB stops chopping movies to make them lighter, I think after BvS.

By the way, my wife doesn’t read or care about comics and she enjoyed SS, although she did say it was choppy, but there was no need of post-movie breakdowns. After BvS, there was definitely a post-movie breakdown and explanation.

I feel like Warner / DC is trying to skip past the creative part where you actually make a quality product and get right to the step where we give them all our money. They need to hire quality directors, give the writers adequate time, keep their own opinions out of the creative process and develop an audience organically.

I think the path they’re taking from “Man of Steel” to “BvS” to “Justice League” is a viable one (I loved the first two films and what I saw in the trailer for part 3 looks really good so far). It’s a different path than Marvel took (e.g., it skipped all the solo films) but that’s not an issue for me because 1) most of the solo Marvel films weren’t all that good (I’d describe them as mediocre–does anyone really want to re-watch “Iron Man 2,” “The Incredible Hulk,” or “Thor” ever again?), and 2) there weren’t solo films for all of the Star Wars characters prior to the original film and yet that series worked just fine, thank you very much.

That said, there is absolutely nothing redeeming about “Suicide Squad.” It’s the worst film I’ve seen in 20 years. I’m having trouble getting my head around how bad it was. It wasn’t a case of it not meeting my expectations or not being how I would have done it. It’s as simple as I have no friggin’ idea what the story was or who these characters were supposed to be on a foundational level. And I’ve been a DC fan since the 1980s. It was two hours long but it felt like an extended trailer. Nothing made sense.

This Akasan guy is one of the biggest douchebags on YouTube. Ugh, no seriously, he’s incredibly conceited and just obnoxious and narcissistic in the worst way. I stumbled on to a few of his videos months ago and it was hard to watch long enough to even get his opinion on anything. Why on Earth would he be featured on this show? Couldn’t you have got Tyrone Magnus or someone with more earnest charm or something?

My favorite thing about Suicide Squad…there are too many things!
    1) I like that they killed Slipknot right away. Not sure what the intent was, but the reaction wasn’t the best when he punched that lady during his introduction and said, “She had a mouth.” That felt pretty sexist, so he deserved a quick death for that alone. To quote Harley Quinn, “Good riddance!”
    2) Boomerang picking up Pinky after their first big fight scene. I loved how subtle that scene was with him picking the unicorn up that fell out of his jacket. It was blink and you miss it, but it just added to how funny his character was throughout. Loved when he picked up his shit and walked out of the bar without hesitation. But he came back for the final fight and proved Flash wrong. There is some honor among thieves.
    3) June Moone’s transformation into Enchantress in the boardroom. The hand coming out and flipping over. Holy shit! That was creepy as fuck and it was so original, and kind of disturbing. Even when she was in the bathroom mirror and bashes that guy’s head into the glass. It made the movie feel like a horror movie. I loved that. That version of her felt a whole lot creepier than the bright version with the light and smoke coming out of her. They should’ve just kept her looking all savage throughout.
    4) Will Smith’s delivery. “Darnell is out” when listing his demands/price. “That’s gangsta!” to Amanda Waller after she smoked all of those employees. “How are you not dead?!?!” when Waller comes back after the last fight. The look on his face when Flagg is talking about Katana’s sword when she boards the aircraft. “Oh, she dead” when Waller orders him to kill Harley for his freedom and his daughter.” And even just at the end when doing math with his daughter…”Some shots you have to take into account the curve of the earth.”
    5) And finally, for the sake of earning some brownie points, my favorite thing about Suicide Squad was meeting Adam after the movie at the opening night screening in Hollywood. Long time fan of the Trinity, not that one, but Hector, Adam, and Agustin. Keep doing what you’re doing. Ignore the haters. Hope to meet the rest of the gang someday!
