Robert Pattinson’s Batman is young, still very raw, and in a take-no-prisoners kind of mood. At DC FanDome on Saturday, director Matt Reeves shared the first footage from The Batman, and it features a brutal peak at the new dark knight.

A dark, gritty tone is established by the trailer straight away. Then we get our first glimpse at one of the film’s main villains, Riddler, who is being played by Paul Dano. Seems he has a vendetta against authority figures who lie, and he very much has a score to settle with Batman.

We also get a glimpse of Commissioner Gordon, played by Jeffrey Wright, and Zoë Kravitz’s Catwoman, who tangles with Batman. But what stands out most is how brutal Pattinson’s Batman is. As he’s bringing vengeance to Gotham, he doesn’t seem afraid to get his hands dirty. If that means beating the snot out of a goon in makeup, that’s the way it’s going to be.

Which, frankly, is a nice change of pace. These heroes aren’t perfect, least of all Batman. So to see him let out his rage has us hopeful we’ll see new emotional layers that we’ve yet to see from the dark knight on the big screen. Also, Pattinson’s Batman voice ain’t half bad.

This version of Batman is expected to cover “year two” of the vigilante’s crime-fighting career. Apparently, only 25% of the film has been shot at this point, so there’s still a lot of work to be done. Hopefully, with filming expected to pick back up in September, The Batman will stick to its October 1, 2021 release.
