The Superhero News hosts discuss the latest news regarding Spider-Man spinoffs. A week ago, producer Amy Pascal had them in the MCU, but now she and Marvel Studios boss Kevin Feige have confirmed that Venom and Silver & Black are on their own.

Spider-Man: Homecoming isn’t in theaters for several more days, but the sequel is set to kick-off the post Avengers 4-MCU, which could be without some fallen heroes. Feige hopes the Homecoming sequel is the only post-Phase 3 film we hear about until Avengers 4 is in theaters, so as not to give us any clues as to who lives, who dies, and what it all looks like.

In the DC Extended Universe, Wonder Woman is dominating the box office while director Matt Reeves says that as of right now, Ben Affleck is his Batman.

Things are a little less relaxed in that galaxy far, far away, however, as the Han Solo standalone film lost directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller in favor of Ron Howard with Star Wars fans left trying to make sense of it all.

    Regarding the Han Solo movie: The issue isn’t Kathleen Kennedy. The issue is Disney management as a whole (Kennedy, Feige, Lasseter), likely at the direction of Bob Iger. None of the three primary Disney branches (Lucasfilm, Marvel, Pixar) are homegrown. They were all purchased by Disney after achieving success as independent entities. But since being brought under the Disney umbrella, the mandate from all of them seems to be (judging by the output as well as behind the scenes stories) maintain the status quo by adhering to a successful formula. This has clearly been a financially successful strategy, but artistically and creatively it has led to inert, vanilla, bland, predictable films. None of them has been outright terrible, but, with very, very few exceptions, none of them have been great or even very good. The films that Disney produces are…just good enough.

    Again, clearly a large segment of the audience has responded to this. But people like me (who have been lifelong Star Wars fans, early vocal advocates for Pixar, and enthusiastic cheerleaders for Marvel (despite having a DC bias)) have moved on. I want to be challenged by the art that I engage with, and this includes genre films as well. For all of the (I would say unfair) criticism that the DCEU has taken, at least they (particularly Zack Snyder and team) are trying something new and different. At least they’re pushing the envelope instead of (as Disney does) serving the same warmed over leftovers over and over and over again.

    So I think it is fair to criticize Kennedy, but in the context of her role in Disney management, of which her compatriots are doing the exact same thing. That’s not to say that what Miller and Lord were doing on Han Solo was going to be good (I had very little interest in that film to begin with after the huge creative disappointments of The Force Awakens and Rogue One). But what TFA and RO do show is that repeating the formula is mandate number one at the Mouse House.

      Well said sir. I don’t blame George Lucas for selling the franchise to Disney but this once great, imaginative franchise is now a joke. And you can just feel the clock ticking on Marvel. For all the s*** these reboots and sequels take, BvS featured the third-THIRD-different major version of both Batman and Superman onscreen and it made a ton of money. Iron Man, Cap and Thor don’t have those legs. Eventually this whole “shared universe” thing will eventually crash (for WB/DC as well). It will take a while but it will happen.

      And as I’ve said before, filmmakers need to think twice about joining these franchises. Lucas, Nolan, Cameron, even Snyder and Whedon, these are filmmakers who treat their projects like art. I can only imagine the discussions had when the decisions were made to bring in the likes of James Gunn, the Russos and Jon Watts to direct their respective films considering their limited resumes.

      And that’s why Disney Animation is the best part of Disney to me because they would put care, risk, and effort into their work.
