In Avengers: Endgame, Thor had a bit of a dad bod, thanks in large part to his excessive beer drinking and poor diet. Will The Dude-esque God of Thunder stick around for 2021’s Thor: Love and Thunder?

According to director Taika Waititi, the topic of Thor’s weight is still being debated by Marvel executives.

“This is an ongoing debate that we’re still having at Marvel,” Waititi told Yahoo. “Cause we’re trying to figure out how long — how many months or years — this is after Endgame, at what point does this take place?”

Thor’s drastically different appearance was a big part of the hero’s arc in Avengers: Endgame. Rather than a chiseled, God-like physique, Thor was overweight and dramatically unkempt. The movie mostly played his weight for jokes, but it also served as a reflection of the hero’s fragile state of mind. And Thor ultimately realized that he was still worthy in spite of everything.

“I think we always want to keep changing it up with Thor,” Waititi said. He’s so interesting when he’s changing all the time.”

Based on those comments, Thor’s winter weight will probably be temporary. Perhaps we’ll see him undergo a transformation after taking part in a Rocky-like training montage.

Either way, the film will feature a dramatic shift for the franchise. Waititi already confirmed that Thor will pass off Mjolnir to Natalie Portman’s Jane Foster, who is returning to the MCU after a long absence.

Thor: Love and Thunder is set to hit theaters on November 5, 2021.
