Thor: Ragnarok exploded at the box office this weekend, opening with $121M in North America. That total could go a little higher by the time it’s finalized tomorrow, but Marvel Studios can go ahead and start celebrating now. Thor: Ragnarok has now earned $427M worldwide and cemented 2017 as the definitely the biggest and probably the best year ever for the studio.
Marvel Studios released three films this year, all of which had opening weekends over $100M domestically. Thor: Ragnarok comes in second, behind Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 ($146.5M) and ahead of Spider-Man: Homecoming ($117M). That’s impressive enough, but what makes 2017 the biggest year ever for Marvel Studios is that all three of those films have combined for $2.17B at the worldwide box office. That breaks Marvel Studios’ previous record of $1.93B in 2015, the combined worldwide total of Avengers: Age of Ultron and Ant-Man.
