Top Gun fans can finally fulfill their need for speed once again! Tom Cruise has announced the start of production on Top Gun: Maverick, the sequel to the wildly popular 1986 film that was directed by Tony Scott.

Joseph Kosinski (Only the Brave) will helm Top Gun: Maverick, which puts Cruise back in the title role that was part of his takeoff to superstardom. He was Hal Jordan back before they were making very many comic book movies.

As it turns out, Cruise remains one of the rumored top choices to play Hal Jordan if or when DC Films ever makes that Green Lantern Corps movie.

Top Gun: Maverick is currently scheduled for release on July 12, 2019.
