America’s most iconic movie franchise, Star Wars, has been denounced by the alt-right for unflattering representation of men, casting to pander to diversity and leftist moralizing. That discussion of gender and race in Star Wars went mainstream after the December 2017 release of “The Last Jedi.” The movie has the franchise’s first nonwhite female lead, portrays an elderly Luke Skywalker confronting his failures and leaves the Jedi order in the hands of a young woman.
In June, harassment prompted Kelly Marie Tran, a Vietnamese American actress who’s in the film, to delete her Instagram account. In August, Tran wrote in the New York Times that online commenters “seemed to confirm what growing up as a woman and a person of color already taught me: that I belonged in margins and spaces, valid only as a minor character in their lives and stories.”

No surprise the squeaky wheels get the grease. One derogatory tweet/post is one too many, but just like with these narrowminded white supremacists, there seems like more of them then they actually exist.

It seems like every article about TLJ not being liked by people has to be because of bigotry. There were a lot of great elements to it. I liked how Luke was handled. It was unexpected. There was some very cool action. Force powers were expanded (as they have been in the original trilogy) The silent hyperspace attack was amazing. I liked how most of the characters were portrayed.
There were things I didn’t like; Ackbar should have had the hyperspace attack. What was the point of casino planet? Laura Dern’s character didn’t seem like anyone that should be in a military position (personal experience) and not letting anyone know there was a plan is idiotic. (Or they had a plan, we can’t tell you because there may be spies. She inspired no confidence. But she did have one great line to Leia before her kamakazie) Snoke’s build up seemed like a waste, but I liked the fight a lot. Chewie should have ate a lot of those flightless birds.Personally, I think Rogue One is the second best SW movie after Empire. It has diversity and a female lead. They executed the story incredibly well. (The only thing that felt off was the music, like it was just not quite Star Wars, an imitation. And Vader’s pun.)

I forgot about Rogue One. You’re right, it was a more diverse cast with a female lead & there was no complaints about racist criticism.
I think using racism/sexism as the excuse for criticism is just the lowhanging fruit way of not being able to take criticism.

The only thing I didn’t like about Rogue one is that once it was over, it’s over we aren’t getting another adventure with any of those awesome characters again.

I really didn’t like the film and it had nothing to do with diversity.

Whereas TFA seemed like just rehashing ANH, this one felt like they wanted to “world build” more then continue with telling the Skywalker family story. They do put the “white guys” more as First Order personnel & “everyone else” as the Resistance members. There’s even a side mission where 2 Resistance members go to a planet of 1%ers & comment on wanting to burn the place down.
In the end, TFA at least felt like a Star Wars movie.

I don’t like the movie, thought so many stupid decisions were made, and it has gotten me less excited for the next one.
However, in my case it has nothing to do with the cast’s races and it’s disgusting that those alt-right aka the Nazis have harassed Kelly Marie Tran. She doesn’t deserve that. Was her characters arc in the movie pointless? Yes, her and Finn’s parts where really bad and should have been a different storyline.
But she shouldn’t be blamed for that, that’s so stupid. Makes no sence. She’s an actress for gods sake.
Blame the writer/director.
Don’t harass a person for their race because you thought the character was bad.Don’t harass people because of their race/sexual orientation/gender period.
It’s a shame that racist scumbags exist. If I could wipe them all away with a singe snap (no pun intended) I wouldn’t hesitate.

It’s not the diversity that bothers me, it’s the characters themselves. The writing is okay at best.
Fin and the engineers storyline was pointless, and I found myself not paying attention during the scenes.
I like Rey’s character a lot, but I want them to explore her flirtation with the dark side more. Generally, I find the new era of star war films to be boring and rehashing of all the films before it, with worse execution

The Film could have been handled better but I thought it was OK, there’s a lot that could have been done better. Kelly being harassed online isn’t OK at all regardless of how you feel about the movie.

There’s no scissor kick cookie wiggles in this one either, so I was very disappoint.
