Over the last decade, we’ve seen a plethora of superhero movies, from Avengers: Endgame to Justice League. Some years we were spoiled with multiple releases, but 2020 was different. Thankfully, Wonder Woman 1984 is here to save us from this drought.

Wonder Woman 1984 will debut on HBO Max (and in theaters) on December 25. Unfortunately, it won’t be available at the stroke of midnight. Instead, you’ll be able to catch it at 12PM ET. That should give you plenty of time to eat breakfast and unwrap gifts before jumping back into the world Themyscira.

The fact that Wonder Woman 1984 is hitting HBO Max is a big deal. It was originally supposed to hit theaters in June, but the spread of COVID-19 forced Warner Bros. to delay the release. Multiple times. Rather than push the release back again, Warner Bros. decided to just make the film available on in its new streaming service.

Following news that Wonder Woman 1984 would be available on HBO Max, director Patty Jenkins released a statement.

“At some point you have to choose to share any love and joy you have to give, over everything else,” Jenkins said on Twitter. “We love our movie as we love our fans, so we truly hope that our film brings a little bit of joy and reprieve to all of you this holiday season.”

This year was supposed to be filled with superhero films. Marvel Studios planned to release Black Widow and The Eternals, but both movies were delayed until next year. This will be the first time in a really long time that only one comic book movie from Marvel or DC was released theaters.

Once Wonder Woman 1984 hits HBO Max, it’ll be available to watch for one month before being pulled from the service (and then presumably hitting the service again a few months later).

The release of Wonder Woman 1984 on HBO Max is the first of many major releases to hit the service. In fact, Warner Bros. announced that its entire lineup will hit theaters and HBO Max at the same time in 2021. It’s a hugely ambitious approach, but thanks to the COVID-19 pandemic, methods of content delivery have changed.

If you don’t have an HBO Max subscription, you can sign up for $14.99 per month.
