I can’t stand these smarmy guys. They’ve just benefited from working in the Rotten Tomatoes era of pretending that okay/mediocre but homogenous movies are great (any MCU movie, any new Star Wars movie, any of the Jurassic World movies, any of the Conjuring movies… really, increasingly, a ton of “good” movies are just good by Rotten Tomatoes standards).
The last time I saw I movie I loved in theaters was two and a half years ago. It’s sad, and Marvel is largely to blame. They introduced the notion that if you could meet a general formula, you could create an interconnected universe of similar movies with a similar formula, devoid of twists or any singular artistic vision, just good enough to get some bored moviegoers to spend their hard-earned cash on a ticket. Just good enough to pass a couple hours, but so forgettable that it drifts from your mind by the time you’ve left the theater.
The Russo brothers are by no means distinctive directors. They have no style. Like any director who’s worked for the MCU, they adopt the officially sanctioned corporate style and storytelling. Nothing sets their work apart. It’s depressing and unartistic at its core.
I’d rather watch bad movies with singular creative visions than anything these guys have to offer. Let someone else watch them pat themselves on the back for two hours, while Hollywood strives desperately to remake itself in the image of Marvel’s corporate universe. Nauseating.
