So how close did this come to happening? Pretty darn close, it sounds like. Bale recently appeared on Josh Horowitz’s podcast Happy Sad Confused and confirmed that talks did take place for Solo:
“Yes, [it was] very tempting. I not only love the films going back to my childhood but also have a very long relationship with Kathleen Kennedy and Frank Marshall because they did Empire of the Sun many years back. There was discussion, [and] I hope there will be future discussions.”
Christian Bale was in talks for ‘Solo: A Star Wars Story’ and still wants to make a ‘Star Wars’ movie

He’d be great playing a character who is dark and mysterious. Kind of like a Saw Gerrera or a darker morally ambiguous Chirrut.

I love Christian Bale but if he’s in a Star Wars film I hope he doesn’t ruin it by demanding changes to suit his liking. He’s a great actor (one of the best) but he does have a primadonna reputation.
When he was originally offered the role in ‘Terminator Salvation’, Bale accepted it but ONLY if major changes were made. Bale was actually supposed be the terminator played by Sam Worthington, and Sam was originally supposed to be John Connor. And the movie was also supposed to focus more on the terminator than on John Connor. But Bale demanded that HE play the role as John Connor instead, and Sam Worthington be the terminator. Bale also demanded that John Connor be more the main focus of the movie instead of the terminator. Basically it was an ultimatum and McG relented. And we all know how bad the movie sucked. And then there was the on-set meltdown we all know of.

That’s true (especially Genisys, wow).
But Salvation actually had potential. You can see a good movie underneath it somewhere. It just never came out.

Yep, it’s weird to say that because normally any movie is better off with Bale IN it. But this is what happens when a primadonna actor is allowed to call the shots and practically rewrite the script.
