Although Tom Holland’s Spider-Man is staying in the Marvel Cinematic Universe — at least for the foreseeable future — it won’t be long until he crosses over into another cinematic universe.

Speaking to Fandom, director Ruben Fleischer made it sound like a meeting between Spider-Man and Venom will happen — just give it time.

“That’s where it’s all going to lead,” Fleischer said. “And that’s the exciting thing, because we changed the origin of Venom… in the comics, he evolved from Spider-Man but because of the Marvel-Sony thing we weren’t able to do that. And so the thing I think it’s building towards, and will be exciting to see, is when they actually do confront each other.

From Sony’s point of view, putting Tom Hardy’s Venom in a movie with Tom Holland’s Spidey is definitely the end goal. That could be a big reason why Spider-Man nearly exited the MCU.

For now, the characters will remain separate. Venom is getting a sequel, while Spider-Man will star in a third solo movie along with another appearance in the MCU. After that, well, a showdown between the two characters could finally happen.
