Disney’s purchase of “Star Wars” production company Lucasfilm is proving to be one of the smartest acquisitions ever made in corporate America.
The deal, worth $4.05 billion in cash and stock, was announced Oct. 30, 2012 and marked the start of a new era in the Star Wars franchise. Disney would make back that investment and more in just a few short years. The four Star Wars feature films Disney has produced have grossed more than $4.8 billion at the box office, according to comScore.

This article, by a financial media company no less, is counting gross receipts and not production/marketing costs. Forbes did a much more financially literate article on this and shows that they’ve only made about a quarter of their money back.

Is stupid to count the box office. Studios only recover like a 60% of the domestic box office, and around a 40% of the global box office. In that regard, it doesn’t matter how much money the movies made, because not all of it goes to the studio. Then you have to sum budget + marketing, and do the same count for toys, video games, books, and the rest of the merchandising. I’m not sure Disney recouped everything just yet.

Amazing how CNBC can employ financially illiterate reporters.
Gross receipts that barely exceed the purchase price doesn’t mean Disney has recouped their outlay. The Net receipts are what matters, and they show that they’ve probably only covered about 1/4th of the $4.05B.
