
It’s the deal of the 21st century, or at least it could be. CNBC reported earlier today that Disney has had talks to acquire the majority of 21st Century Fox. According to The Wall Street Journal, those talks are not currently active, but that doesn’t mean a deal can’t be made later and it certainly won’t stop fans from imagining what it would mean for Marvel Studios.
Any potential deal in which Disney buys most of 21st Century Fox has ramifications well beyond the superhero landscape, but that is the space Marvel fans care about most. The negotiations included Fox’s film studio, which holds the licenses to the X-Men (including Deadpool) and Fantastic Four movie franchises. Fox’s hold on those licenses keeps many of the most popular Marvel heroes and villains away from the Disney-owned Marvel Studios and out of the Marvel Cinematic Universe inhabited by The Avengers and the Guardians of the Galaxy.
