Paramount Has Canceled ‘Star Trek 4,’ and Disney’s ‘Star Wars’ Is to Blame

Star Trek was intelligent Science Fiction. The original show consulted JPL and was written by some great scfi writers. Granted it did not appeal to the whole of the audience but somehow it managed to spawn a bunch of TV shows and even more movies before JJ came along.

The new movies are Space Fantasy (ie Star Wars) and don’t just ignore science they trash the original tech rules in more ways than I can count. Beyond that the movie has a complete and utter lack of common sense, or organizational logic.

There is a big threat. Lets put all the Cadets on the ships! Kirk should be in the brig but nah lets hand him control over the ship. Command in this Star Fleet is run like picking players for sandlot baseball I guess.

The Kobayashi Maru. It is a secret test of character. Nobody knows about it until they take it. That is a valuable thing. After a lot of winning can you handle the loss? What does it do to you? All this and more can be learned.

But in the JJ movies they discuss it in public council. How can that be a test of character?

“You are about to take a test and you are going to lose. Lets see how you do.”

What? That cannot work. It is like JJ knew the words and some of the ideas but that was it. And I guess to his credit he admitted he was not really much of a Star Trek fan and preferred Star Wars. So that is what he made.

I love Star Wars. Space Fantasy is fun. But Star Trek was always about more than that and what JJ did to it is unforgivable.

Here is a comparison. Take the Godfather movies and make them Musical Comedy. Some people will like it. A lot of people might like it. But lovers of the movies are going to kill themselves. Or at the very least they are going to say ‘That is not the Godfather’ and they would be right.
