Sony’s Spider-Man: Homecoming isn’t remotely a flop. Yet the $175 million-budgeted Marvel Cinematic Universe entry earned another $45.2 million in its second weekend of release and has now earned $208.27m in 10 days. But the film did drop 61% in its second weekend, identical to the second-weekend drops for Spider-Man 3 and The Amazing Spider-Man 2. And that $45m weekend figure, from a $117m opening weekend, is identical to the $45m third weekend of Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man (in 2002) and the second weekend of Spider-Man 2 (coming off an $88m Fri-Sun/$180m Wed-Mon debut in 2004).
So, unless it catches up over the next month (and that’s not remotely out of the question), we’re looking at an identical multiplier to Amazing Spider-Man 2 ($202m/$91m) and Spider-Man 3 ($336m/$151m). That will lead to a domestic total almost identical to the $262m cume of The Amazing Spider-Man (from a $137m Tues-Sun debut) back in 2012. And adjusted for inflation, it will be noticeably fewer tickets sold than that 2012 reboot. And if the second-weekend figure holds up, the 61.3% drop will be the worst ever for a Marvel Cinematic Universe title.

Given the 175M price tag, it really doesn’t need 800M to make a profit, does it? Kinda less significant compared to the 250M budget that BvS had, not to mention it’s also much bigger marketing budget.

I still remember the projections you had when i speculated with WW crushing the BO two months ago, i was crazy enough to think Homecoming could suffer from fatigued sequel syndrome..
BvS is considered a failure by you, and yet Homecoming with similar BO results is not? The two biggest Marvel characters in one movie, underperforming.-
Many are blaming for the two worst spider-man villains named amy pascal and avi arad since they still had influence in the film as can tell by the supporting cast.

Spider-Man has still got some ways to go, but if any Marvel movie was to make a billion dollars at the B.O., for me it was Guardians when summer season began. Never once I thought Spider-Man Homecoming could muster a billion dollars (for real, you’ve been putting words in my mouth for months now. I actually wonder if you read what I wrote or if you just glanced through it and thought I was making these bold claims I really wasn’t). It came out during a crowded season, and with 3 super hero movies already released this year, which further contributes to it’s fatigue, two of which during the very same summer.
Either way, BvS had a 250M budget and made 873M. Homecoming with the same numbers would have a much bigger profit, this is undebatable. No trailer for Spidey also garnered that much attention or hype, especially considering it’s much lower stakes and grounded villain. It got me hyped for the future of Spider-Man on the big screen, though. The movie has nothing on Raimi’s first two films, but Tom Holland’s interpretation and Spidey’s characterization were great, I thought!
Also, that’d be kinda valid if Iron Man was in the title and had a similar role to Spider-Man. He didn’t, he was clearly a supporting character, and barely showed up (almost only voice over) until the latter half of the movie. Batman v Superman literally has the two biggest names in super hero history on it’s name, besides alluding to the first comic book team of super heroes in it’s subtitle. -
I do have to agree that if the movie fails to at least beat both Amazing Spider-Man movies (despite also having a much lower budget than either) it’s definitely a disappointment.

No disrespect to the current Spidey and his plans, but honestly if after Infinity War they announced that they’re scrapping everything and that Spider-Man 4 was a go I would be so happy.
If we’re lucky enough they’ll go super comic booky with this new Spider-Man and have him jump dimensions to see alternate universe Spideys, which you HAVE to throw Tobey in for.

Homecoming looks and has the feel of a Disney marvel cartoon. Who wants to pay money to see that when you can watch it on TV. Marvel market Spidey to the wrong age group. The only refreshing thing about Homecoming was the multiculturalism and real villain(Keaton). In the end, Spidey doesn’t need Starks to breastfeed him to become a hero. DC/WB’s diversity formula for the TV shows says different about Diversity and Multiculturalism. Wonder Woman’s leggy boxoffice performance is also proving your opinion wrong about multiculturalism too. Another point to think of is the Fast and Furious franchise. The story line is crap but due to it’s diversity and multiculturalism that has made it into a billion dollar franchise.
