Holland went undercover in an American high school in order to prepare for the role: “American high schools are so different to British ones. Bullying wasn’t really a thing, so when they cast Flash Thompson they knew they didn’t need a 6ft 5in jock to beat Peter Parker up. They needed a rich, smug kid commenting on how bad his trainers were. And I did it to practice my American accent.”

So Flash didn’t need to be a big bully because Peter Parker is played by a British actor whose personal experience doesn’t reflect American society, therefore the movie Spider-Man – about an AMERICAN character – should somehow reflect that. How does this make any sense at all? Sorry to say it, but this casting was so far fetched and most likely, only done for “diversity” quotas. I’ll reserve final judgement until I see the film, but this rationale makes no sense.

Agreed. Especially as bullying via physical force and intimidation is still rampant in schools. This is a puzzling choice.
